Dear Home School Parents & Families,

I extend this invitation to you and your children to be a part of the Sibelius Academy Music Festival concert on Friday, September 24 beginning at 9:00 AM at the Calumet Theatre, for free. More information is below.

"Finlandia University is very pleased to invite your students and teachers to a free Sibelius Academy Music Festival concert on Friday, September 24, starting at 9:00 a.m., at the Calumet Theatre, Calumet. The only cost to you would be transporting the students to and from Calumet.

The concert will last no longer than 90 minutes. The Sibelius students will talk briefly about their instruments and themselves, and then play a few selections. There will not be an intermission or refreshments. Three international duos will perform this year: classical (from Estonia), folk (from Finland), and contemporary (from Spain).

Is this something that your music students would like to attend? What I am requesting from you now, so we can plan accordingly, is your commitment that your students will attend, and an estimate of the number of students that will participate from your school.

At this time we are inviting music students only, but we want to fill the Calumet Theatre, which seats about 700 people. So, depending on the number of positive responses and the estimate of the total number of students who will attend, we may be able to extend the invitation to additional students later on. A small number of seats will be reserved for the general community with a ticket price of $5 per person.

Below is the essential information about the concert and this year's Sibelius Festival.

Where: Calumet Theatre, Calumet, MI

Date: Friday, September 24

Time: 9:00 a.m.

Length of the concert: No longer than 90 minutes. There will not be an intermission or refreshments.

Who can attend? The concert is most appropriate for middle and high school music students, but all students are welcome to attend.

How many students can attend? The Calumet Theatre seats 700 people. We would love to fill the theater!

Who are the musicians this year? All of the musicians are post-graduate students at the Sibelius Academy of Helsinki, Finland. This year we will welcome a classical piano/violin duo from Estonia, a traditional folk string/wind instruments duo from Finland, and a contemporary clarinet/accordion duo from Spain.

What will the concert be like? Each of three duos will present information about themselves, their instruments, and the music they will perform, followed by a short set of music.

Cost: The event is free for students and parents, but you will be responsible for transporting students to and from the theater.

Why does Finlandia want to host this concert? As an educational institution and a proud member of the Copper Country community, Finlandia University is hosting this special concert as a cultural outreach activity for area youth. Following our success presenting a similar concert last fall in the Ishpeming area, we wanted to give the same opportunity to our community youth.

Can community members attend? Yes, a portion of theater seating will be reserved for community members at minimal cost."

Thank you!

Lynn

Community Comments/Questions: (formerly: General Comments/Questions)

We have gotten quite a few requests/sales info over the last few Updates! I've really enjoyed including these in here. If you had something posted and still haven't gotten the responses you wanted – please email me at ccheupdates@gmail.com and have me re-run your post. I don't want to re-run posts that have been answered but I'm learning that with so much information in these Updates! it sometimes takes a couple times before a particular item gets acknowledged.

From Val (Updates Coordinator):

I wanted to address the short notice you receive on activities from time to time. This can be caused by one of two reasons: 1. CCHE just recently received the information themselves OR 2. I waited until there were enough items to justify putting out an Updates! The whole purpose of publishing these Updates! emails are to combine lots of great homeschooling information into a couple emails a week. So, I try not to send out an Updates! without several items… unfortunately, that means that I sometimes must hold onto something a little longer than other things….

Now that that's cleared up – here are some more of my personal bookmarks that I thought others might be interested in (only a few today). If you have any that you want to share – please send them along!
