Friday's Field Trip - Postponed

Due to the significant rain, cooler temperatures and expected winds today and tomorrow, the tree identification & forest study field trip planned for Friday the 24th (tomorrow) will be postponed. We are tentatively looking at doing it on October 29th, at the Lake Linden School Forest, but will send out confirmation of that as we get closer. Not that we let the weather boss us around, we do want these field trips to be positive experiences for the kids and possibly inspire them-- and the predicted weather won't do much for that.

"Whoo's in Houghton?" – Being Rescheduled

The organizers of the wild bird show, "Whoo's in Houghton?" were unaware that many of the public schools were not in session on October 8th. Therefore, they are working on rescheduling this event. Please watch the Updates! for the new date and registration information.

Meet the Author at Portage Library

The Portage Lake District Library will host a local author and book signing on Saturday, October 2, from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Lisa A. Shiel will present her latest book Forgotten Tales of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and share wonderfully offbeat and all-but-forgotten tales from the U.P.'s history. Find out why the barber said to the corpse, "That's the best I've ever seen you look." Meet the sleeping man who rode the rails without a train. Discover the truth behind the rumors that one mining town was cursed with the ten plagues of Egypt, and learn why hugs terrified an entire city.

A resident of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Lisa A. Shiel researches and writes about everything strange, from Bigfoot and UFOs to alternative history. She is the author of six books, including Strange Michigan and the award-winning Backyard Bigfoot, and she formerly served as president of the Upper Peninsula Publishers and Authors Association. You can find her online at www.BackyardPhenomena.com.

Library presentations are free and everyone is welcome. For more information, please visit www.pldl.org.
