Dear Home School Parent-Teachers,

I just wanted to remind you that there are two opportunities next week for your students to participate in a unique local cultural opportunity. We are pleased to invite the Home School community to these free events and hope you and your students can attend. (If you have already confirmed with Lynn Gaunt that you will attend, thank you for coming!)

Finlandia University is hosting two free informal Sibelius Festival concerts for school-age youth and their teachers on Wednesday, September 22, 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., at the W.C. Peterson Auditorium in Ishpeming, and Friday, September 25, 9:00 to 10:30 at the Calumet Theatre in Calumet. It's not too late to attend!

The only obligation for you is to transport your students to and from the Peterson Auditorium.

The concerts will last about 90 minutes, and each of three duos will present information about themselves, their instruments, and the music they will perform, followed by a short set of music.

All of the musicians are post-graduate students at the Sibelius Academy of Helsinki, Finland. This year we will welcome a classical pianist from Estonia, a traditional folk string/wind instruments duo from Finland, and a contemporary clarinet/accordion duo from Spain.

As an educational institution and a proud member of the Upper Peninsula community, Finlandia University is hosting this special concert as a cultural outreach activity for UP youth. Following the overwhelmingly positive response to a similar Ishpeming-area Sibelius Festival concert last fall, we wanted to do it again – times two!

A portion of theater seating at both events will be reserved for community members at minimal cost.

Will you and your students attend? If so, please let me know approximately how many students and parent-teachers we should expect, and at which concert. We would love to have a full house at both the venues!

If you have chosen not to take advantage of this, I would appreciate hearing your comments about how we might convince you to attend in 2011.

Additional information about the Sibelius Festival is attached.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincere thanks and regards,

Karen

(NOTE FROM VAL – I'm not sure if they still want RSVPs by today still– I'm trying to find out now but to be on the safe side – please RSVP to either Karen or Lynn today. Also PLEASE let them hear something either way – we REALLY should try to show our appreciation for inviting us to these events!)

Lake Linden School Forest Field Trip

Reserve a couple hours on your calendar for Friday, September 24th for another GREAT field trip at the Lake Linden School forest starting at 1:30. Depending on the number of families that attend, it could cost ~$4 or so per family. Bring your tree guide books and other plant identification material. We will have a great time, again!

Tree Identification and Determining Forest Types

Michelle Miller, from MTU and her husband Justin, a licensed consulting forester, will lead us in a forestry field trip at the Lake Linden School Forest on Friday, Sept. 24 at 1:30. We will be identifying trees using dichotomous keys and field guides, along with determining the forest types by observing the soil and ground vegetation present.

Justin will also demonstrate the high-tech tools foresters currently use to take forest measurements and we will compare these with the tools used in the past.

(Thankyou Amy for coordinating!)
