PLDL – Natural Health & Wellness Series:

The Portage Lake District Library will host the fourth monthly program in the natural health and wellness series on Thursday, September 9, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Professional Massage Therapist Angel Janssen will present "Reflexology to Boost Your Immune System." She will teach participants a simple reflexology treatment that can be done on hands and feet to stimulate the body's immune system. Learning this treatment will give yourself a boost to help you sail through the cold and flu season this year.

Janssen is a licensed and nationally certified massage therapist with practices in Toivola and Hancock. She is also a certified instructor for LaStone Therapy and volunteers her time at Portage Hospital doing massage for people living with cancer.

This natural health and wellness series is held on the second Thursday of each month. Other classes that will be taught by Janssen in October and November will be announced.

All programs begin at 6:30 p.m., and everyone is welcome. These classes are free and no pre-registration is required. For more information, please visit www.pldl.org.

PLDL - "U.P" Book and Movie Tour:

Both of their fathers taught mathematics at Westwood High School. Both are graduates of Negaunee High School (1987 & 1991). Both attended Northern Michigan University. Both are working to turn the novel "U.P." into a film.

Ronald "R.A." Riekki is the author of "U.P.," the best-selling novel from Ghost Road Press published in 2008 that actor (Into the Wild," "Milk") and producer Steven Wiig is working to bring to the big screen. The novel is a brutal coming of age story about four boys set in Marquette County in 1989.

The two Negaunee natives, who both attended Northern Michigan University, will present the book and their ideas for the movie at the Portage Lake District Library on Tuesday, September 14, at 6:30 p.m. While in the area, they will be scouting locations for the film and hoping to meet locals who want to act in the movie.

Reikki has an M.F.A. in Theater Arts/Playwriting, an M.F.A. in Creative Writing/Fiction, and a PhD. in Literature and Creative Writing. He has won several awards and nominations for his plays, poetry, stories, and novel. Steven Wiig was encouraged by actor, writer, and director Sean Penn to start acting and was cast in the films "Into the Wild" and "Milk" where he became immersed in the world of filmmaking. Throughout his career he has worked on films, videos, and documentaries and also worked full-time on the road and in the recording studio with the multi-Grammy award winning heavy metal band Metallica.

Both the novel "U.P." and related merchandise will be sold at this event.

Library programs are free and everyone is welcome to attend. For more information, please visit www.pldl.org.

From Val (Updates Coordinator):

This week has been very busy for me as my family adjusts to the new school year. Unfortunately, that meant falling behind on the Updates! Including missing the Hike that was scheduled for today. I wanted to apologize to those that missed this great opportunity. I will try to get back into the swing of things and make sure you get the information in a more timely fashion.

Hope everyone's having a wonderful September!
