Family Science & Engineering Night at Carnegie Museum (Tonight)

The Michigan Tech Family Science Night Program is teaming up with the Carnegie Museum to offer a Family Science & Engineering event from 6:00-7:30 pm, Tuesday, September 21, at the Carnegie Museum in Houghton.

Parents and children in grades 1-6 are invited to participate. Some of the activities to be offered include "mining for chocolate" where family teams will determine how best to mine to get the most "gold" and protect the environment. In another activity, family teams will tackle a package engineering challenge. Several shorter activities will have families playing "Engineering Charades," "Teaming Up" to build a tower, and brainstorming uses of various "engineered" objects.

"Science & engineering is fun! We can all be scientists and engineers!" is the message of the Family Science & Engineering Program sponsored by the Western UP Center for Science, Math and Environmental Education.

These activities are a great way to get students excited about science and engineering, and make connections to the real world! Family Science & Engineering Nights provide a wonderful opportunity for parents and kids to spend a fun evening learning together –and its free!"

Don't miss the fun!

This event will be held Downstairs at the Carnegie Museum which is located on the corner of Huron and Montezuma Streets (the former Portage Lake District Library building) in historic downtown Houghton. Free parking is available behind the building or across Montezuma Street in the City lot. For more information, email

"Whoo's in Houghton?" Live Bird Assembly Program

From Val: I have offered to coordinate the RSVPs. Please respond to this at ccheupdates@gmail.com. This event is a first come, first serve basis – so I need to know how many and the approximate grade equivalency of each child. This event is only open to grades 2-9. Kindergarten and 1st grade classes are not allowed – per the request of the presenters – due to the controlled environment required with live animals.

(Registration deadline for our group: Tuesday, September 28th)

Local classes are invited to attend "Whoo's in Houghton?" at Michigan Tech on Friday, October 8. The time of the event may change but our group is tentatively scheduled for 11am-Noon. The program is presented by the Upper Peninsula Raptor Rehabilitation Center of Gladstone, Michigan and will include two live birdsa Great-Horned Owl and a Barred Owlas well as, several other "surprise" species.

This unique event is sponsored by The Wadsworth Hall Student Association (WHSA) of Michigan Technological University. WHSA volunteers will do small group activities with the students to further enhance their learning experience.

PROGRAM LENGTH: 1 hour. Program length can be adjusted upon request.

LOCATION: Michigan Technological University, Douglass Houghton Hall Front Lawn (outside).

Participants must provide their own transportation to Michigan Technological University.

COST: Free! (But you may want to bring money as past events of this nature have had souvenirs for sale)

Fourth Thursday in History – Keweenaw Historical Park

Revealing the Cliff Mine

Have you ever walked along one of the trails at the Cliff mine, stumbled
upon a crumbling masonry ruin, and wondered what it was? If you are one of
the many people who explore the site, chances are you have come across a
feature you can't identify. Join Sean Gohman as he describes recent
archeological investigations to learn more about these features and this
significant copper mine.

The Cliff mine began in 1845. The first Keweenaw mine to pay its investors
a dividend, the Cliff operated successfully until 1869, when production
dropped for the first time. Different mining companies continued to work
the lode on and off until 1931; the shafts were finally capped in the
1960s. Today, only remnants of this once-mighty mine mark the landscape:
poor rock piles, masonry foundations, and wagon road traces provide clues
to the how the men, women, and children of this mine lived, worked, and
played. Gohman, a PhD student at Michigan Technological University, spent
the summer documenting the site as part of an archeological field school,
and will share what he and the other students discovered.

This program will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 23rd, at the
Eagle River Community Center, located at 57935 Calumet Avenue in Eagle
River, Michigan.
It is part of the Fourth Thursday in History program
sponsored by Keweenaw National Historical Park.

The Fourth Thursday in History series arranges public presentations on
important aspects of Copper Country and regional history, including
techniques for historic preservation. Presentations are scheduled in venues
throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula, particularly at historic sites
associated with specific topics. They are free and open to the public.

For further information, including specific directions to this event,

Community Comments/Questions:

I am still looking for anyone interested in the Japanese language or culture. If you know of anyone that might be interested in teaching Japanese to homeschoolers or if you are interested in learning – please contact me. Val: ccheupdates@gmail.com

From Val (Updates Coordinator):

If you place something in the community comments/questions section and you do not get the response you are wanting – please let me know and I will re-run the question/ad/comment. I ask that you do not abuse this but I have found that sometimes information is overlooked unless it appears twice or so in the Updates!

I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to the parents and kids that attended last week's hike to Canyon Falls – my son (TJ) had an absolute blast! I think that's the most fun he's had at a homeschooling event yet.
