Newborn Clothing Donations Needed – Urgent!

There is a young lady, Mary (withheld for archive), from Houghton who has been attending Newlife International School of Midwifery in the Philippines. Mercy Maternity Center is the charity-based clinic she and other women work out of with approximately 1,500 babies born annually. A very impoverished area, there are also outreach ministry opportunities for these young women in training in the areas surrounding the clinic as well.

Mary is heading back to the Philippians on Tuesday so I know this is short notice, however... Mary would like to take back as many newborn/small baby onesies as possible to be used with these new moms and their precious babies. Bigger sized onesies are not need at this time.

If you have any newborn/small-size onesies to donate or to sell for garage-sale prices, please email me. Any onesies can be dropped off at
(withheld for archive). I may be able to arrange for multiple onesies to be picked up at your house as well if you are unable to drop them off by Monday. Since Mary is leaving on Tuesday, they all need to be here by Monday at the latest.

Here is a link to Mercy Maternity Center for those interested in finding out more about where/who these ladies are serving:

THANK YOU!!

Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange Meets at Portage Library

Regular meetings of the Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange will be held on the 3rd Monday of each month from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Portage Lake District Library. The first meeting will be September 20, and everyone is invited to participate.

Each month will feature a different type of food, and September's meeting will focus on gluten-free cookies. Participants are welcome to bring their favorite gluten-free cookies for sampling and are encouraged to share their recipes. Please list all ingredients used in making foods that are shared at these meetings. Bringing food is not a requirement for attendance.

The Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange is organized by and for those who are interested in or required to follow a gluten-free diet. Gluten-free eating requires the avoidance of all wheat, rye, barley, and oats. Most people find it challenging at first, but are excited to find recipes and foods that are fun and easy to make and tasty to eat. The Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange is an opportunity to share those great recipes and learn from others. Everyone who is interested in learning more about gluten-free eating is encouraged to attend.

Portage Library Hosts Complementary and Alternative Medicine Information Program

Rachele Bachran from the Western Upper Peninsula District Health Department thinks it's time to talk. On Wednesday, September 22, she will do just that as she presents "Time to Talk" from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Time to Talk is an educational campaign that has been launched by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) at the National Institutes of Health at Bethesda, Maryland.

The purpose of the campaign is to encourage patients, particularly those aged 50 and older, and their health care providers to openly discuss the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Talking not only allows fully integrated care, but it also minimizes risks of interactions with a patient's conventional treatments.

When patients tell their providers about their CAM use, they can better stay in control and more effectively manage their health. When Providers ask patients about CAM use, they can ensure that they are fully informed and can help patients make wise health decisions.

Bachran will give participants a TELL tip sheet for patients, an ASK tip sheet for providers, patient wallet cards to keep track of all medicines including CAM therapies, and postcards listing additional online resources. She will also show a brief power point presentation and explain details about the Time to Talk campaign.

Bachran is a School and Community Health Educator with the Western Upper Peninsula District Health Department and has an M.S. degree in Health Promotion.

Portage Library Wellness Series Continues

The Portage Lake District Library will host the fourth monthly program in the natural health and wellness series on Thursday, September 9, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Professional Massage Therapist Angel Janssen will present "Reflexology to Boost Your Immune System." She will teach participants a simple reflexology treatment that can be done on hands and feet to stimulate the body's immune system. Learning this treatment will give yourself a boost to help you sail through the cold and flu season this year.

Janssen is a licensed and nationally certified massage therapist with practices in Toivola and Hancock. She is also a certified instructor for LaStone Therapy and volunteers her time at Portage Hospital doing massage for people living with cancer.

This natural health and wellness series is held on the second Thursday of each month. Other classes that will be taught by Janssen in October and November will be announced. All programs begin at 6:30 p.m., and everyone is welcome. These classes are free and no pre-registration is required. For more information, please call the library at 482-4570 or visit www.pldl.org.

General Question/Comment Section:

Hello Friends,

As you may know, I homeschool my son, Viyan (8) and work at Tech. Now that our current nanny Alex Larson is all to set to be off on her new adventures, I am looking for a replacement. This will be a part time position requiring between 12 and 20 (on rare occasions 25 hours) a week.

I am looking for someone with a car, high levels of energy and genuine interest in being with a child of his age. I would like them to work at our place in Houghton but be open to taking him to homeschooling events and outdoor trips. It will be great if the person can do light work (like making an occasional lunch/snack for Viyan and themselves and cleaning up afterwards etc.)

The pay will be around or above minumum wage and also includes additional gas money from your home to ours and to cover your trips with Viyan.

If you or anyone you know is interested, please email me at(withheld for archive).

Thanks
