CCHE Curriculum Sale (Tomorrow) --
Even if you do not plan on selling curriculum, please stop by and shop. So far I know of at least one family that's bringing over 300 items! So there will be some great deals to be had! The sale will be from 9:30am to 1:30 or 2:00pm. Please forward this to anyone you think would be interested:
To sell - here's what you need to do:
1) Make a numbered list of the items you are selling and the asking price of each- with your name, phone number and address at the top.
2) Attach a 3x5 card to each item you are selling (on the inside front cover of books) with your name/address/phone number, the name of the item, the asking price, and the what number it is on the list.
3) Drop off the list and books at the Evangel Baptist Church on College Ave in Houghton at 9am on Saturday, August the 14th.
There will be coffee, tea and some munchies. Please consider staying for socializing and shopping! Also, any assistance would be appreciated! If you choose to leave - you must return to pick up any un-purchased items by 1:30pm (if you cannot do this - please make arrangements with me prior to the day of the sale). You will receive a check from CCHE for the items that sold soon after the sale.
If you cannot get your items to the church on Saturday please contact me to work out details - or if you have any other questions - Val (withheld for archive)
PLDL Hosts Program about the Amazing Earthworm --
If you've ever wondered just what it is that earthworms do, come to the Portage Lake District Library and find out.
Erik Lilleskov will present "Earthworms: Not Just for the Birds" on Tuesday, August 17, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Participants will learn that earthworms are ecosystem engineers that have huge impacts on soils and the ecosystems they inhabit. They will also discover that earthworms are fun to learn about.
This family friendly program invites everyone to come and learn about earthworms that live in the Keweenaw. Participants will go outside and look for earthworms, practice identifying them, and build an earthworm home with which they can watch earthworms in action. They will also help build an earthworm home for the children's area in the library.
Lilleskov is a Research Ecologist with the US Forest Service. He studies how organisms affect soil processes and is studying earthworm effects on forest ecosystems.
PLDL Hosts Student Exchange Travelogue --
The Portage Lake District Library will host a local Houghton student's presentation about her travels and experiences in Austria through the Rotary Youth Exchange program. Madelyn (withheld for archive) will present "My Year in Austria!" on Wednesday, August 18, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
After graduating from Houghton High School, Madelyn lived in Wiebern, Austria as a Rotary Youth Exchange Student and went to school in Reid im Innkreis. There she learned the value of seeing world issues through eyes other than her own. She became immersed in Austrian culture, made friends from all over the world, and experienced being part of an Austrian family and home.
Participants will visit cities and the mountains of Austria through her slide show presentation. Shoup invites everyone to come and experience the world through a new perspective, learn about the challenges and rewards of living abroad, and discover the rich culture of Austria.
The Rotary Youth Exchange program provides opportunities for youth to live in another country. Rotary was the world's first service organization, and they work through various projects and fundraisers to improve the quality of life worldwide. Local Rotary clubs in the Keweenaw have provided dictionaries to elementary schools and have been active participants in the Youth Exchange program, the Hancock Playground project, the Houghton Waterfront project, and many other activities.
PLDL Second Program on Loons --
I already sent you the information about long time loon researcher Keren Tischler's program on Monday, August 16, at 6:30 p.m. There will be another presentation about loons at Isle Royale on Tuesday, August 17, at 1:00 p.m. by Isle Royale educators Katie Donovan and Lori Honrath.
PLPD Reminder: Outdoor Concerts on Fridays
The outdoor concert next Friday will be especially enjoyable. Emma and Carrie (withheld for archive) have been performing since they were very young musicians in the Copper Country Suzuki Association, and their talent is exceptional. Carrie still studies in the Suzuki program and Emma is a Suzuki instructor. I have heard them perform throughout the years and am excited to have them perform for us.
Library programs are free and everyone is welcome to attend. For more information, please call the library at 482-4570 or visit www.pldl.org.

From Val (Updates Coordinator)
  • Sorry I missed the Ontonagon County Fair – if there's ever any event in your area that you think others might want to know about – please feel free to forward it to me!
  • Also, I apologize for the various fonts and formatting issues. I'm having issues with programs autoformatting and changing the font for me!
  • Finally - if you have asked to be removed from this list and still are receiving the Updates (or if you were added and didn't want to be)- please let me know. Apparently gmail automatically adds a contact if you email them so when I emailed a couple people to say I've taken them off the list - they were re-added and people that didn't necessarily want to receive the Updates but that I needed to correspond with were added by mistake.

CCHE does not pass on emails/addresses/names from any of our mailing lists (electronic or snail mail) to any other groups, organizations or individuals.
