Hike with a View!!
Join us for our third hike with a view this summer! From 2-4 PM,
Saturday, August 21, the Family Adventure Hike will visit the Michigan
Audubon's 405-acre Lake Bailey Sanctuary near Eagle Harbor.
Sponsored by
the Western UP Center for Science, Math & Environmental Education, the
hike is approximately two miles roundtrip, with moderate elevation gain.

The hike will be led by Michelle and Justin (withheld for archive).

Interested hikers should meet at 2 PM at the Lake Bailey trailhead
parking area. Come prepared with sturdy shoes, a backpack, plenty of
water and snacks. Rain gear, sun hat, sunscreen, insect repellant, and
an extra layer for windy weather is encouraged. A camera and binoculars
are also recommended

To reach the trailhead, follow M-26 from Eagle Harbor towards Copper
Harbor.  The sanctuary is 4 miles east of Eagle Harbor, just before the
west entry to Brockway Mountain Drive. Look for the Lake Bailey Preserve
sign and parking area on the south side of the road just past the Silver
River bridge.

The trail passes through several different forest communities as it
rises nearly 200 feet in elevation to a beautiful overlook of the wild
Silver River drainage to the southeast.  The sanctuary is entirely
wooded with a mixture of northern conifers and hardwoods, including red
and sugar maple, balsam fir, white and yellow birch, white pines, red
oak, white spruce, trembling and big tooth aspen, and white cedar. The
first part of the trail passes through a white cedar bog with yellow and
pink lady-slippers which bloom in early to mid-June. Twinflower and
blueberries are common along the trail in the mixed conifer forest. The
state-endangered heart-leaved arnica occurs in scattered locations along
the trail and blooms in early to mid-July. The heart-leaved arnica is a
perennial with bright yellow daisy-like flowers which resemble a small
woodland sunflower. It is classified as an endangered species in
Michigan. On the south end of the sanctuary, there is a dry oak forest
where trees are suppressed in height by the cold north winds off Lake
Superior.

Over 250 species of plants have been catalogued on the Lake Bailey
Sanctuary, including several species of orchids and four
state-threatened or endangered plants. In the spring, the forest floor
is covered by beautiful and delicate wildflowers. One can hear warblers,
thrushes, vireos and sometimes the elusive winter-wren in the
underbrush.
