COPPER COUNTRY HOME EDUCATORS UPDATES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MARCH 26TH SCIENCE FIELD TRIP
t's almost time for another science field trip!!!  Mark your calendars for Friday, March 26th at 1pm and come to the Lake Linden School Forest (get there ~10 minutes ahead of time).  What we have lined up is the following:
Winter Weeds—grades 6+
We'll take a closer look at herbaceous plants in the winter.  What does their presence tell us about the habitat? How do people and wildlife use these plants for survival? Shelter? Food? Medicine? What methods of seed dispersal have these plants developed? Which is most effective?
Objectives: Students will identify various forbs commonly seen in our winter landscape and consider their importance to wildlife, insects and humans. Students will be able to explain five methods of seed dispersal.  (for advanced knowledge, you could read up on plants/weeds native to our area)
Best Insulator – grades 2/3 - 5
Summary: Students will test the insulating qualities of different materials in both wet and dry conditions. They will collect data and create a graph of their findings.
Objective: Students will make a hypothesis, use thermometers to collect data, and evaluate their results using a graph.
(for advanced knowledge, you could work with your kids on graphs, hypotheses and learn about insulation and what purpose it serves)
Younger kids can observe/participate in the sessions with their parents and older siblings or they can snowshoe or sled (or maybe even splash in mudpuddles!).
This has always been a great place to go, especially in the winter.  There is a log classroom where we start and end our field trip.  We spend the majority of the time outdoors – dress appropriately-- on snowshoes (bring your own if you have a favorite pair, otherwise you can use those that are provided at the Forest).  If we can all plan to put about 10 minutes into cleaning up the classroom when we are done, that would be appreciated (we need to make sure any trash is picked up and the floor is mopped before we leave).
If you could RSVP with the number and grade levels of your kids, just so that I can let the presenters know approximate numbers of attendees for each program so they can bring adequate supplies.  There is no limit on the number who can attend.  You can RSVP via email to(withheld for archive)(leave a message) by Monday March 22nd.  If you have questions, just holler (I will be out of town between 3/15 and 3/22 so you won't catch me then).  Hope to see all of you there!
Amy
How has ski jumping changed over the years? What kind of ski equipment is used today? At this meeting, award-winning producer Frida Waara will present the connection between skiing and mining in the Upper Peninsula.  She will also share images and equipment from the past and present.
LOCAL HISTORY SMACKDOWN REGISTRATION
Dear Past or Prospective Local History Smackdown Coach:
The 8th Annual Copper Country High School Local History Smackdown is just
around the corner, so please remind your students that now is the time to
form their teams. Last year's Smackdown included seventeen teams
representing eight of the Copper Country's High Schools in perhaps the most
exciting Smackdown yet. We expect at least as many teams this year and will
register no more than twenty teams total. With registration on an as
received basis, encourage your students to register early, so they don't
miss out. Registration also determines team order in the event, with the
questions getting progressively harder through the rounds, the earliest
registrants consequently get the easiest questions. Another reason to
register early! The registration deadline is March 26th this year.
As for the event, there are no changes to the format or rules, but all new
questions have been written for this year's Smackdown, many drawn from new
sources, many of which are available on-line. For a list of those new
sources and links to those on-line, please visit the Smackdown page on our
website at http://www.nps.gov/kewe/forkids/smackdown.htm
You will also find at that same URL, registration information, a coaches
guide, a student guide, and this year's sample questions (for new coaches -
be sure to study those!). For your convenience, a registration form is
attached to this email.
Unfortunately for many Copper Country high schools, local history has been
dropped from their curricula to middle or even elementary school. So
please, think of this event as a great opportunity to enhance your
student's historical education and to perhaps make history more relevant
and fun. It is certainly a great way to show off your students to the
broader Copper Country and for them to add another highlight to their
college applications. So, please, if you have not participated before as a
coach, consider it this year.
If you haven't coached a team before or it has been awhile, and you have
questions, please contact me. I would be happy to speak with you.
Thank you.
Brian
HIGHSCHOOL BOWL TEAM
Here is information on a possible homeschool team on high school bowl aired Saturday nights on TV13:
I received a phone call today from Dwight (withheld for archive) seeing if there was anyone interested in putting together any high school bowl team from the  U.P.  to compete with other high school teams from the U.P. starting in the fall.
The team would consist of a coach, four team players and four alternates.  If you are in any way interested in this, please contact Dwight Johnson for more information.  This was not a possibility when our children were in home school high school (I had contacted the TV station about it).
There would just be one team from the whole U.P.  So, as soon as possible please contact:
Dwight
