KEWEENAW YOUTH SYMPHONY CONCERT ON FEBRUARY 27

COPPER COUNTRY HOME EDUCATORS UPDATES

KEWEENAW YOUTH SYMPHONY CONCERT ON FEBRUARY 27
Do you enjoy music? If you are a music lover, the Keweenaw Youth Symphony Orchestra will be performing pieces to suit a variety of tastes at the Finnish American Heritage Center on February 27^th at 6:30 p.m. The KYSO will be under the direction of Dr. Elizabeth Meyer.
It's not often that a soloist plays a typewriter, but Adam Johnson will play one during the performance of /The Typewriter/ by Leroy Anderson. He'll complete each line of his music with a stylish /"Ding."/ The ticking and tapping of the typewriter corresponds beautifully with the melody carried out by the strings. This piece is a wonderful example of ingenuity in regards to instrumentation.
Let the fiddle songs /St. Anne's Reel/ and /Soldiers' Joy/ chase away your winter blues and put the bounce back into your step. These pieces will feature graduating senior Kelly Suvanto on the violin. Another memorable piece is the /Jig/ from /St. Paul's Suite/ written by Gustav Holst (published 1922). Originally composed for the St. Paul's Girls' school, St. Paul's Suite is the most famous of many songs written for the school.
On a more classical note, the orchestra will perform /Adagio molto./ and /Allegro con brio/ from Beethoven's /First Symphony/. Written when Beethoven was twenty-nine, this symphony was written before he lost his hearing. A challenging piece in the key of C Major, the excitement builds from the very first chord.
The KYSO, joined by the CCSA Preparatory String Orchestra, will also play /The One Bow Concerto/, directed by Dr. Joel Neves, Music Director of the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra. Twenty string players, three string soloists and one bow! Your imagination should go wild as you try to figure that out, but if you want to see how it's done, come to the concert to find out!
The members of the KYSO, have worked hard to put together this eclectic selection of music. Allow this non-traditional classical concert to give your spirits a mid-winter boost. This concert comes to you from the Copper Country Suzuki Association with support from Finlandia University, Michigan Technological University, The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The concert is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
