COPPER COUNTRY HOME EDUCATORS UPDATES
Spring Flower and Forest Identification

On Thursday, May 14th at 1:30 at the Lake Linden School Forest (for $20 to be split among attending families) will be one of the best science field trips we've had yet!!

Michelle Miller from MTU along with her husband who is a licensed consulting forester are going to work with us to show us how to identify spring flowers and other plants. Using this information they will then show us how to identify, based on which flowers are present, what soil types we have and what tree species (forest type) you would expect to find.

We will have the opportunity to take forest measurements using tools that foresters used for many years, until modern technology came on the scene, to determine tree height and volume of wood that could be obtained from that tree or forest plot. We will also be able to see how the new tools are used to make a forester's job quicker.

There will be identification guides available, but you may want to bring your own or considering purchasing one (since your family will  love to identify flowers on their own after this field trip) from Book World, Copper World, etc. A couple of good books are: Wildflowers of Michigan by Stan Tekiela, Wildflowers in the Field and Forest by Steven Clemants and Carol Gracie, Michigan Wildflowers in Color by Harry Lund, Peterson Field Guide: Wildflowers of NE and North-central North America, Goldenbooks: A Guide to Field Identification Wildflowers of North America.

With tick season already underway, you'll want to make sure you dress appropriately to help with this. Be able to tuck your pants into your socks and wear lighter colors if you have. I've heard that "wind pants" and their slippery texture help keep ticks off.

Please RSVP so we can get a tentative headcount so we have enough supplies available, though no one will be turned away if they decide at the last minute to join in! If we don't get enough RSVPs, we may not be able to do the field trip though. If you could let me know at(withheld for archive) by May 7th if you know you will be attending.

Save the below link for directions to the school forest if you don't already know how to get there.  http://www.lakelinden.k12.mi.us/cat_index_111.php . We'll be having more field trips at the School Forest!

 4-6pm, April 16 - Larry Lankton's New Book Launch

All area teachers are invited to attend the book launch and signing party of Larry Lankton's newest book, Hollowed Ground: Copper Mining and Community Building on Lake Superior, 1840s – 1990s.
The book launch will take place from 4-6 pm, Friday, April 16, at Michigan Tech's Van Pelt Library,  in the first floor East Reading Room.  A short program introducing the book and its author will take place at 4:30 pm.  Refreshments will be served. The MTU Campus Bookstore will be selling the book at a $5 discount at this event only (retail $34.95).
This is the first book to tell the entire story of copper on the Keweenaw Peninsula: from its geological formation, to its mining by Native Americans, to the rise and fall of the native copper mining industry (1840s-1960s), and  the rise and fall of the copper sulfide mining industry at White Pine (1950s-1990s).  Hollowed Ground contains 392 pages long and 100 illustrations, and is published by Wayne State University Press. It describes the mining technologies, environmental issues, evolution of local communities, and the legacy of copper mining on Lake Superior, including the creation of the Keweenaw National Historical Park.

>
> The deadline for registration without a late fee is April 16, 2010. If you are registereding for the 14-15 or older age groups pllease do so as soon as possible so we can get these age groups started as soon as possible

> The advantages of online registration are huge - we can greatly improve communication in the league by being able to send information out rapidly to selected lists such as coaches in a certain age group, individual teams or all players in a particular age group. Thank you to John and Byron who have worked many hours to ensure that online registration becomes a reality this season.

Portage Library Hosts Programs
The Portage Lake District Library invites children to a special Storytime on Saturday, April 10, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. as Ariel Lake presents "Flutter By, Butterflies." Kids will learn what butterflies eat and how they live, find out which butterflies live in the Keweenaw, listen to a story about a very special butterfly, and make a butterfly project to take home. Butterfly and caterpillar cookies will be served.

The Young Adult Book Club will meet on Monday, April 12, from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. to discuss The White Darkness by Geraldine McCaughrean and to choose the next book to read. Learn about the amazing world of honey bees with local beekeeper Todd as he presents "An Introduction to Beekeeping" on Tuesday, April 13, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. His slide show will cover bee hive basics and how honey bees go about their business. Participants will learn what types of equipment a beekeeper uses, how much time it takes to maintain hives, and what the costs and rewards of beekeeping are. There will be a small, empty hive and basic tools of the trade to examine and pure Keweenaw honey to taste. Gemelli has been a beekeeper for 10 years. He is fascinated by the important role bees have in nature and is eager to share his knowledge and experience with others.

Music enthusiasts are invited to see the documentary film Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story on Wednesday, April 14, at 6:30 p.m. Prior to the screening, rock music historian Anthony Daniel will give a brief talk about Stax Records and the music of Memphis, Tennessee, which many consider to be Motown's Southern cousin.
