Carnegie Museum Gingerbread Events –

Coincidental to our first big snowfall of the 2010 holiday season, we have unpacked our Edible Playhouse for the Fourth Annual Gingerbread Village display!  We invite the public to create gingerbread buildings to add to our display.  This year, all new creations will be awarded a prize in one of many different categories including "most accurate reproduction of a local landmark building", "most different types of candy used", "most colorful house", "tallest building", etc.  Also, to complement our current Bridge Exhibit, we will have special prize categories for bridges.  Can you build a swing bridge out of pretzels and gumdrops??

Don't want to work alone?  Come to one of our Gingerbread Building Workshops - Saturday, November 27, noon to 4:00, Tuesday, November 30,    3:30 – 7:00, and Thursday, December 1, noon to 5:00 - and help with the annual repair and maintenance of our playhouse.  Or bring a kit to work on in the company of others.  We will have some frosting "glue", and bits of candy and pretzels etc.  All abilities and ages are encouraged!! (But children must be accompanied by an adult!)

As part of the Downtown Houghton Christmas festivities,  Santa will visit the Museum Saturday, December 4, and on Thursday, December 16th, from 3:30 – 6:00 p.m we will hold our Annual Holiday Open House.  We will have snacks, hot chocolate, and the completed gingerbread houses on display including our walk-through playhouse.  At 4:00 p.m. Chris Alquist, Portage Lake District Librarian, will read stories and at 5:00 p.m. members of the Copper Country Suzuki Association will perform a small concert.

So, put on an apron and start baking, or whip up a batch of frosting!!  Prize judging will be during our Holiday Open House, December 16, so all entries must be brought to the museum by 7 pm, Tuesday, December 14   Donations of candy, cookies, pretzels etc. to cover our gingerbread playhouse or to share with others are always welcomed!  Please drop them off during any of our open hours.  For more information, including a good recipe for the "glue", please contact us at history@cityofhoughton.com or 482-7140.

Even if you are unable to make a "house" for us this year, we hope that you will stop by to view the exhibit – perhaps you will be inspired for next year!

With thanks and best wishes for a happy holiday season,

Elise Nelson, Carnegie Museum

Wellness Series at PLDL –

The Portage Lake District Library will host its monthly program in the natural health and wellness series on Thursday, December 9, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Health advocate Julia St. Martin will discuss household and environmental toxins in her presentation "If You Knew It Was Poison, Would You Still Buy It?" She will discuss the connections scientists and doctors are discovering between products we are surrounded by each day and chronic illnesses such as asthma, cancer, allergies, birth defects, and many other problems. Participants will learn about the dangers of chemicals such as quaternium-15 and formaldehyde, which products these and other toxins are found in, how the body absorbs poisonous substances, and what people can do to eliminate many of these chemical toxins from their homes.

St. Martin began her work years ago in an effort to rid herself of constant headaches and her desire to use alternative remedies. Through research into their causes she discovered that many products that are commonly found in households are caustic to the immune system and make our body an easy target for ailments. She shares what she has learned and encourages people to be proactive when it comes to their own health.

All library programs are free and open to all. For more information, please visit www.pldl.org.

Mushing in the UP at PLDL –

The Portage Lake District Library invites everyone to think snow for a dogsledding program on Wednesday, December 1, at 6:30 p.m. with longtime musher Tom Bauer.

In "Mushing in the U.P.: A Family Experience," Bauer will describe the history of dogsledding and introduce members of his immediate mushing family, including a couple of their dogs. He will present a slide show that portrays a year in the somewhat unusual lifestyle of a musher, and also show several mushing related websites. Participants will learn about local sled dog races and events including Beargrease, the UP 200, and Copper Dog as well as the Iditarod. They will also have an opportunity to handle dogsledding equipment and racing gear. If there is enough snow, Bauer will give dog sled rides or demonstrate skijouring or boardjouring.

Bauer has been training and racing dogs for over 20 years and participates in numerous races. He placed in the top 10 of the first UP 200 race in 1990 and is planning to run the Iditarod in 2012. He owns Otter River Sled Dog Training Center and Wilderness Adventures and offers rides, tours, group events, and year round wilderness camping with sled dogs. He is a strong supporter of youth who want to learn mushing skills and participate in sled dog races and events.

All library programs are free and everyone is welcome. For more information, please visit www.pldl.org.

Making Sense of Retirement at PLDL –

The Portage Lake District Library is hosting an educational seminar that will help participants make informed decisions about their own retirement.

Bob Nelson, Edward Jones Financial Adviser of Houghton, will present "Making Sense of Retirement" on Thursday, December 2, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Starting with the premise that if you don't save for your retirement, no one else will, participants will learn the five basic questions they should ask themselves to prepare for retirement. They will also learn about options they can use now to save for retirement and discover how time can help or hurt their retirement goals.

"About 77% of Americans ages 50 to 65 have saved less than $37,000 for retirement, according to the U.S. Census Bureau statistics," Nelson said. "However, 47% of Americans ages 50 to 65 will depend on personal retirement plans as their largest source of income."

This program is free and will include time for questions and answers. Everyone is welcome. For more information, please call the library at 482-4570.

December 2 to January 14, 2011

Opening Reception: Thursday, December 2nd, 7:00-8:30 p.m

Artist Lecture beginning at 7:15 pm

Dina Kantor: Finnish and Jewish

How does Judaism survive in a country where there are only two synagogues? In a nation of 5.3 million people, how do 1,500 Jews maintain their cultural identity? Artist Dina Kantor explores these questions in a series of photographs documenting the lives, work and religious traditions of the small Jewish community in Finland.  Kantor's photographs investigate the construction of identity and community in our increasingly complex and multi-cultural world.
