Michigan Nature Association's Redwyn's Dunes Nature Sanctuary –

1-3 pm, Sunday, Dec. 12.   Snowshoe hike at Redwyn's Dunes Nature

Sanctuary (about 1 mile roundtrip)

These spectacular rolling dunes are populated and stabilized by wind-contorted red pines, aspen, white pine, and hardwoods.  Wear snowshoes or X-country skis (ungroomed trail). Bring snacks & water; be prepared for cold and wind (just in case!) This is a great "beginning" showshoe hike and great for families!

Driving Directions: Meet at trailhead. To reach Redwyn's Dunes, follow M-26 about 3.5 miles north of Eagle River or 4 miles south of Eagle Harbor.  The sanctuary is across from Great Sand Bay and has a large sign marking the entrance. Be sure to park safely along M-26.

Stewards Phil and Joan will lead the hike.

Old Fashioned Christmas – Chassell

Enjoy a real old fashioned Christmas in Chassell with band concerts, horse-drawn sleigh rides, a "Home for the Holidays' tour, a special exhibit at the Chassell Heritage Center, a community tree and so much more. Saturday December 11th at the Chassell Heritage Museum (in the old Elementary School on Second Street) - Santa and Mrs Claus will be visiting from 11am to 2pm.

Second Sunday Folk Dance -

The Second Sunday Folk Dance Series presents Red Tail Ring on Sunday, December 12.  The concert begins at 4:00 PM CT with White Water providing a short opening set.  Red Tail Ring will then perform the featured concert. After the concert portion of the evening, snacks and beverages will be available (at no charge) and the dance begins with The Front Parlor Dance Band playing tunes and Bette Premo providing dance instruction and calling (always easy and gently taught). The last song of the evening ends at 7PM CT.

Laurel Premo and Michael Beauchamp form the music project known as "Red Tail Ring."  The duo draws from Appalachian old-time and folk music and creates new arrangements and compositions with great harmony and instrumental work by both musicians. Red Tail Ring has been busy with fall performances in Maine, Vermont, New York, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan. In a recent review of Red Tail Ring's 2010 released five-song EP (August Roads), a New York-based blog ("onesweetsong.blogspot.com") reported "the project is so dead on in execution that if not for the high recording quality, you might wonder if Michael and Laurel were singing to us directly from some remote Appalachian hill in the 1930s." Red Tail Ring is currently working on two full-length albums, one of which will feature original tracks, and the other traditional folk songs, both set to launch in spring 2011. Visit Red Tail Ring's website at: www.redtailring.com.

Between 1:00 and 3:00 PM CT, Bob Arthur will lead an Old-time Music Jam Session at the Dining Hall.  Bring an instrument and play along.  There is NO CHARGE for the Jam Session.

Admission the Second Sunday Folk Dance event is $7/adult and children under 15 are free. The Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp is located between Iron River and Crystal Falls (in Iron County, Michigan), 2 miles west of Crystal Falls on US-2.  Turn south on Bible Camp Road and drive for less than a quarter mile.  Turn right on Fortune Lake Camp Road and just drive a short distance.  For more information about the folk event check out the website at:  http://www.white-water-associates.com/second.htm or call 906-822-7889.

The remaining line-up of musicians for the Second Sunday season includes Bryan Bowers (January), LJ Booth (February), Stas and Misha (March), and Anne Hills (April).

See you on Sunday.

Christmas Sales to Support CCHE –

Remember – if you plan on buying books, software, movies, video games or other presents online – please consider purchasing your items through CCHE's website or blog! It doesn't cost you anything extra – so if you already planned on buying online – why not help out a local homeschooling organization?

Someone asked me how the sales benefit CCHE. CCHE receives a portion of each sale. That money will go to continue paying for our post office box, the subscription for the magazine at the library and for web hosting. Hopefully, we'll also be able to expand services (including that monthly parents-night-out, resources for the new to homeschooling and other services that homeschoolers in the area have asked for).

So, for the next couple weeks there will be an advertisement for Amazon.com on these sites (this is the only time you'll see it).  You can click the advertisement to go to Amazon.com – then a portion of anything you buy will go to help support your local homeschooling community!

http://cchearticles.blogspot.com

This promotion is in addition to our Amazon.com storefront that only sells homeschool related books/items. Throughout the year – if there is a homeschool item you'd like to see in our store or some curriculum you plan on buying – just email ccheupdates@gmail.com and we can add it. Then those purchases will also help support CCHE and the greater homeschool community!

Thank you!

Discover Isle Royale at PLDL –

The Portage Lake District Library will host "Discover Isle Royale," a series of monthly programs that are sponsored by the Isle Royale Institute and Isle Royale National Park.

On Tuesday, December 14, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., Dr. John Vucetich will present "Of Moose and Wolves." Dr. Vucetich will show slides taken on Isle Royale, which is home to the world's longest-running study of a predator and its prey, and share the knowledge and understanding gained from years of studying the relationship between moose and wolves. Participants will also be able to see and touch bones and other items found on the island.

Dr. Vucetich is an Assistant Professor of wildlife ecology at Michigan Tech University. His interests include population biology, environmental ethics, and the ecology of wolves and moose. He has worked on Isle Royale for nearly 20 years and has been co-leading the Isle Royale wolf-moose project since 2000.

Library presentations are free and everyone is welcome. For more information, please visit www.pldl.org.

Great Start Collaboration – Finlandia

Dear Home School Educators and Parents,

I work at Finlandia and also am encouraged to play a part in the greater community. Service is one of Finlandia's core values and it is so fun to give back, to learn more, and to find out what I can do to help.

I have been a part of the GSC (Great Start Collaborative) as a parent representative on the great GSC board and also a member of the Parent Collaborative. It is a wonderful way to brainstorm together what we need to do to improve our local area for young families. It takes a village and that is our philosophy throughout our work together.

I am inviting you to our website at http://ccgreatstart.org/collaborative-about.php to explore it as we develop it and would invite your comments about it and what could be added to make it more valuable to you.

You can also look up Great Start Collaborative – Copper Country and find the organization on Facebook.

As always, I invite your input either about Finlandia and the collaborative's efforts to improve services for children age 0-6 years of age and their families.

Thank you for your continued insights and perspective as we work together to make lasting change and improvements.

Finnish & Jewish - Finlandia University Gallery

December 2 to January 14, 2011

Opening Reception: Thursday, December 2nd, 7:00-8:30 p.m

Artist Lecture beginning at 7:15 pm

Dina Kantor: Finnish and Jewish

How does Judaism survive in a country where there are only two synagogues? In a nation of 5.3 million people, how do 1,500 Jews maintain their cultural identity? Artist Dina Kantor explores these questions in a series of photographs documenting the lives, work and religious traditions of the small Jewish community in Finland.  Kantor's photographs investigate the construction of identity and community in our increasingly complex and multi-cultural world.

From Val (Updates Coordinator):

I want to apologize for any events I may have missed. My life has been somewhat hectic of late and the "Updates!" had to be put on the back burner. Hopefully, once the new year has begun – things will quiet down some for me and I'll be able to put more time in on CCHE stuff.
