Slime Time Field Trip -
Don't forget to come to the Portage Lake library Tuesday, November 9th  at 1:00 for the field trip where our kids will learn about what biomedical engineers do.  The kids will also get to make slime out of ingredients we can easily obtain to make more at home! The field trip is geared around middle school age students, but will be suitable for students 4th – 12th, and younger if the parent or older sibling is involved.  I think everyone will like to be part of slime-making.

RSVP to (withheld for archive) if you haven't already (to give MTU an idea on approximately how much supplies they need to bring) but please show up even if you decide at the last minute to come.   Don't forget to bring your quart size Ziploc bag to make and bring your slime home in (I think they will have some bags there too, but those of us who have bags, should bring.)

See you there!!

Killer Whales Swimming –

TheYMCA Killer Whales swim team is starting the Winter 1 session on Nov 8. The session lasts 6 weeks. They practice from 6:30-8:30 at the Houghton High School pool. Registration is on Monday, Nov 8 in the Houghton High School muli-purpose room. To request a flyer contact Tracie (withheld for archive)

CCHE's Amazon Store –

Copper Country Home Educators has partnered with Amazon.com to create an online store custom made for area homeschoolers. New items are being added daily. Please let us know if there are any items you would like to see added.

Remember: A portion of each sale goes to help support CCHE and its continued service to local homeschooling families. The items do not cost any more than it would from their site originally. So if you were going to buy it anyway? Why not support our homeschooling community too?

Finlandia University Updates –

1.      Finlandia is currently accepting applications for Spring 2011 which begins in January 2011. If you or your student (junior level or above) is interested in a college course, simply go to www.finlandia.edu and fill out the online application. It takes approximately 20 minutes and there is no fee involved. Dual enrollment is a possibility for your student. We hope you take advantage of this opportunity and of course let me know should you need assistance or are dissatisfied in anyway.

2.      November 7-11, 2010. I am traveling again, this time to six community colleges in the northern MN area. Headed to Hibbing, Ely, Virginia, Eveleth, Grand Rapids, Cloquet, and Duluth. If there are parents who are interested in meeting with me, they can email or call me and I would be glad to meet them at a local restaurant, church, or library to meet and share college information.

Class Acts at the Rozsa Center -

FOOLZ!

Two performers: one outwardly calm, the other wound tighter than a spring.  If there's a dim witted innocence about them, it's because their childlike charm permeates their world, placing them where something always seems to go wrong. Blending classic vaudeville with their high-tech optical illusion "NEONMAN", FOOLZ offers up something for everyone.

Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 1pm

Grades: 2-5

Registration needs to be made through Sara (withheld for archive) to attend any of the shows through our homeschool groups (Copper Country Home Educators & Superior Home Educators). Do not contact the Rozsa Center directly as seats have already been reserved for our groups. Also, grade recommendations need to be observed for all performances. The cost is $1 per student due the day of the performance. Seats are limited, so reserve early.

MOPS Childcare Position –

MOPS  is looking for a childcare worker in our toddlers room. We have a few homeschoolers who enjoy this work already, but I thought I'd throw it out there for anyone who might be interested in the CCHE group:

·         The hours are 9:15am-11:45am.

·         Twice a month on Tuesday, usually the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays. ( 11/9, 11/30, 12/14, 1/11, 1/25, 2/8, 2/22, 3/1, 3/15, 4/5, 4/19, 5/3).

·         Compensation is $16 per a week.

·         Also, we could use subs, if someone is interested in a smaller commitment (also paid).

·         They should contact Julie (withheld for archive)

Wellness Series/Medicinal Herbs at PLDL –

The natural health and wellness series continues with a program about "Medicinal Herbs and How to Use Them" on Thursday, November 11, at 6:30 p.m.

Home School Drama Club 2011 –

Drama Club 2011 (mark your calendars!): The homeschoolers' drama club will, as usual, begin meeting this year in late January, with the goal of putting on a performance in late April or early May.  Because we have so many families with children in both the older and younger groups, we've decided that it would be most convenient to meet somewhere large enough so that both age groups could meet at the same time and place each week, in separate rooms.  This should save time (and gas money) for parents who would otherwise have to drive to two meetings a week in different locations.  We have permission from Bethany Baptist Church in Dollar Bay to use their facilities, so both the older students and the younger students will be meeting there on Tuesdays from 3 to 4 or 4:30 beginning January 25th.

We will have a planning meeting earlier in January, so parents and students, please jot down any thoughts and/or suggestions you would like to discuss.  New members are very welcome to join us!  No acting experience is necessary!

If you would like more information about the homeschoolers' drama club, please call Margo (withheld for archive)

Community Comments/Questions:

CALL FOR AUTHORS – CCHE would like to start putting articles on one of their blog sites and Facebook fan page. This is a great way for our kids and parents to get published. If you have any ideas you'd like to try out – please contact me at: ccheupdates@gmail.com. Different formats can be accommodated and full credit will be given to the author. Once enough articles are collected, there may also be an opportunity to have the book published!

Superior Home Educators are also calling for submissions for their newsletter. Please contact   sheupdates@gmail.com for more information.

Do you have a blog (or is there a blog that you love)? Many homeschool families maintain blogs to keep the extended families updated on activities. If you have a blog (or one that you follow and love) that is appropriate for all ages and caters to homeschooling, education or family – CCHE would love to link to it! Just email the link to me at ccheupdates@gmail.com. Check out our blogs at: http://www.ccheupdates.blogspot.com and http://www.cchearticles.blogspot.com

From Val (Updates Coordinator):

I have had the pleasure (and sometimes stress) of updating CCHE's various web properties. Currently I am working on our main page at: http://www.cchomeeducators.com. This is an ongoing process and I would love to hear feedback from our community. I am also looking for people to submit blogs for us to link to (the blogs can be about any "family oriented" subjects and do not necessarily have to be local. I am also hoping people will want to contribute articles or reviews of resources they have found useful.

Thank you for taking the time to help CCHE grow and become more responsive to the homeschooling community!
