Aggasiz Research Vessel Trip – From Amy

A few years ago, our homeschool middleschool and highschool age students were able to take a local trip on MTU's research vessel Aggasiz. I have been in contact with MTU and we are going to watch for an advanced window of good weather and try to schedule this opportunity for our older students!!! (hopefully within the next 30 days) There is a limit on the number of passengers permitted on the boat, so I will compile a list of those students (first to respond gets first on the list—20th to respond might miss the boat this year) who would like to have a GREAT learning experience on the Aggasiz and help collect and examine sediment samples and see how other measurements are collected for research on the lake. This is a great opportunity that rarely comes our way. Please email me (withheld for archive) with your student's name, phone number and grade level and I will put the list together, and then we will stand-by (we will have no more than ~5 days notice of when the outing will take place, so we need to be flexible).

Great Start Materials Open House - PLDL

You are invited to our grand Open House on October 6 to view $10,000 worth of new materials for families, caregivers, and providers with young children. These materials are geared towards children birth through pre-school, and include an amazing collection of books, games, musical instruments, puzzles, puppets, music CDs, DVDs, and more.

All of this is made possible through a grant received by the Great Start Regional Child Care Resource Center/4Cs of the U.P. (Community Coordinated Childcare).

I hope you will come and see what this generous donation has to offer and how it supports early literacy for our children.

Upcoming Events – Community Arts Center

The Community Arts Center is located at 126 Quincy Street in Hancock.

Closing Reception for Bike Art

Friday, October 1 5:00-6:30pm Refreshments will be served.

Andy Gregg makes functional eco-friendly furniture from salvaged bike parts. His product line including chairs, tables, barstools, coat racks and mirrors are modern and stylish with an urban look. The artist who has a fine arts degree in photography was inspired by designers and architects such as Mies van der Rohe and Charles Eames. In 1994 Gregg was hired to start Blackstone Bicycle Works in Chicago. Its mission was to rescue bikes out of the waste stream and teach inner city youth how to repair them. In exchange, the kids not only learned job skills, but they also had a chance to earn a bike. During that eight year stint, Gregg soaked up inspiration and a commitment to recycling…and had a steady supply of materials. In addition to his furniture the exhibit will include Gregg's photography featuring gritty daredevil bicyclers and street savvy inner city kids - on bicycles, of course.

Community Comments/Questions:

None today –

If you have something you'd like to share with the homeschooling community, please email it to ccheupdates@gmail.com !

From Val (Updates Coordinator):

First: On behalf of the homeschooling community, I'd like to thank Finlandia University for inviting us to the Sibelius Festival Concert and for making us feel welcomed. Wasn't it nice that we were mentioned with the other schools in the welcoming messages? All-in-all, it was a beautiful presentation at the Calumet Theater that highlighted five talented young women. I know it actually got my son talking about music – and Finnish Heritage!

Also: If anyone has any events they want posted to the Updates! please pass them on. Remember that it doesn't have to be a big coordinated event… maybe you just plan on being at the park/library/etc on such and such date and would like the chance to meet up with other homeschooling families! And please feel free to send me suggestions for items you'd like to see in our Updates!

Thanks,

Val
