Carnegie Museum Gingerbread Events –

Coincidental to our first big snowfall of the 2010 holiday season, we have unpacked our Edible Playhouse for the Fourth Annual Gingerbread Village display!  We invite the public to create gingerbread buildings to add to our display.  This year, all new creations will be awarded a prize in one of many different categories including "most accurate reproduction of a local landmark building", "most different types of candy used", "most colorful house", "tallest building", etc.  Also, to complement our current Bridge Exhibit, we will have special prize categories for bridges.  Can you build a swing bridge out of pretzels and gumdrops??

Don't want to work alone?  Come to one of our Gingerbread Building Workshops - Saturday, November 27, noon to 4:00, Tuesday, November 30,    3:30 – 7:00, and Thursday, December 1, noon to 5:00 - and help with the annual repair and maintenance of our playhouse.  Or bring a kit to work on in the company of others.  We will have some frosting "glue", and bits of candy and pretzels etc.  All abilities and ages are encouraged!! (But children must be accompanied by an adult!)

As part of the Downtown Houghton Christmas festivities,  Santa will visit the Museum Saturday, December 4, and on Thursday, December 16th, from 3:30 – 6:00 p.m we will hold our Annual Holiday Open House.  We will have snacks, hot chocolate, and the completed gingerbread houses on display including our walk-through playhouse.  At 4:00 p.m. Chris Alquist, Portage Lake District Librarian, will read stories and at 5:00 p.m. members of the Copper Country Suzuki Association will perform a small concert.

So, put on an apron and start baking, or whip up a batch of frosting!!  Prize judging will be during our Holiday Open House, December 16, so all entries must be brought to the museum by 7 pm, Tuesday, December 14   Donations of candy, cookies, pretzels etc. to cover our gingerbread playhouse or to share with others are always welcomed!  Please drop them off during any of our open hours.  For more information, including a good recipe for the "glue", please contact us at history@cityofhoughton.com or 482-7140.

Even if you are unable to make a "house" for us this year, we hope that you will stop by to view the exhibit – perhaps you will be inspired for next year!

With thanks and best wishes for a happy holiday season,

Wellness Series at PLDL –

The Portage Lake District Library will host its monthly program in the natural health and wellness series on Thursday, December 9, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Health advocate Julia St. Martin will discuss household and environmental toxins in her presentation "If You Knew It Was Poison, Would You Still Buy It?" She will discuss the connections scientists and doctors are discovering between products we are surrounded by each day and chronic illnesses such as asthma, cancer, allergies, birth defects, and many other problems. Participants will learn about the dangers of chemicals such as quaternium-15 and formaldehyde, which products these and other toxins are found in, how the body absorbs poisonous substances, and what people can do to eliminate many of these chemical toxins from their homes.

St. Martin began her work years ago in an effort to rid herself of constant headaches and her desire to use alternative remedies. Through research into their causes she discovered that many products that are commonly found in households are caustic to the immune system and make our body an easy target for ailments. She shares what she has learned and encourages people to be proactive when it comes to their own health.

All library programs are free and open to all. For more information, please visit www.pldl.org.

Mushing in the UP at PLDL –

The Portage Lake District Library invites everyone to think snow for a dogsledding program on Wednesday, December 1, at 6:30 p.m. with longtime musher Tom Bauer.

In "Mushing in the U.P.: A Family Experience," Bauer will describe the history of dogsledding and introduce members of his immediate mushing family, including a couple of their dogs. He will present a slide show that portrays a year in the somewhat unusual lifestyle of a musher, and also show several mushing related websites. Participants will learn about local sled dog races and events including Beargrease, the UP 200, and Copper Dog as well as the Iditarod. They will also have an opportunity to handle dogsledding equipment and racing gear. If there is enough snow, Bauer will give dog sled rides or demonstrate skijouring or boardjouring.

Bauer has been training and racing dogs for over 20 years and participates in numerous races. He placed in the top 10 of the first UP 200 race in 1990 and is planning to run the Iditarod in 2012. He owns Otter River Sled Dog Training Center and Wilderness Adventures and offers rides, tours, group events, and year round wilderness camping with sled dogs. He is a strong supporter of youth who want to learn mushing skills and participate in sled dog races and events.

All library programs are free and everyone is welcome. For more information, please visit www.pldl.org.

Making Sense of Retirement at PLDL –

The Portage Lake District Library is hosting an educational seminar that will help participants make informed decisions about their own retirement.

Bob Nelson, Edward Jones Financial Adviser of Houghton, will present "Making Sense of Retirement" on Thursday, December 2, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Starting with the premise that if you don't save for your retirement, no one else will, participants will learn the five basic questions they should ask themselves to prepare for retirement. They will also learn about options they can use now to save for retirement and discover how time can help or hurt their retirement goals.

"About 77% of Americans ages 50 to 65 have saved less than $37,000 for retirement, according to the U.S. Census Bureau statistics," Nelson said. "However, 47% of Americans ages 50 to 65 will depend on personal retirement plans as their largest source of income."

This program is free and will include time for questions and answers. Everyone is welcome. For more information, please call the library at 482-4570.

December 2 to January 14, 2011

Opening Reception: Thursday, December 2nd, 7:00-8:30 p.m

Artist Lecture beginning at 7:15 pm

Dina Kantor: Finnish and Jewish

How does Judaism survive in a country where there are only two synagogues? In a nation of 5.3 million people, how do 1,500 Jews maintain their cultural identity? Artist Dina Kantor explores these questions in a series of photographs documenting the lives, work and religious traditions of the small Jewish community in Finland.  Kantor's photographs investigate the construction of identity and community in our increasingly complex and multi-cultural world.

From Finlandia –

Hello Home School Families!

Hope you are enjoying the pre-winter weather.

I have dedicated myself to being active outside and enjoy the cool, fresh air. So far, my children and I have enjoyed sledding and making a mini snowman. We have also been feeding the birds. I hope to get out and re-discover snow-shoeing and cross country skiing. Plus, I remember one time in my childhood when my parents made a campfire after digging a hole in the snow and we roasted hot dogs and marshmallows. Good memories.

I am writing to inform you that a new semester will begin in January. There is still time for you and your students (Junior level or above) to register for one class or many.

Applying is online and absolutely free. www.finlandia.edu. Look for the "Apply Now!" banner at the top of the website or go to "Future Students" and find the application there. It takes approximately 15 minutes to fill out the application.

When asked who referred you to Finlandia, mention my name and I will then be assigned the wonderful task of acclimating you to the process, providing a campus tour if necessary, and helping you with any questions you might have either for yourself or your student. Students have taken one class or many. Some come seeking a degree; others come because they have that spark to be a lifelong learner. Whatever prompts you or your student to apply, I am glad you are keeping Finlandia University in mind.

If you have questions before you apply (or questions or comments of any kind about our university), please send me an email, call, and we can either talk via computer, telephone, or set up a visit for us to meet in person.

Enjoy the snowy season that is upon us. Be well.

Second Sunday Folk Dance (TOMORROW) -

Dear Friends,

The Second Sunday Folk Dance Series continues its 25th season on Sunday, November 14 with special guest artist Gerry O'Beirne from County Clare, Ireland.  The concert begins at 4:00 PM CT with White Water providing a short opening set.  O'Beirne will then perform the featured concert. After the concert portion of the evening, snacks and beverages will be available (at no charge) and the dance begins with The Front Parlor Dance Band playing tunes and Bette Premo providing dance instruction and calling (always easy and gently taught). The last song of the evening ends at 7PM CT. At the folk dance, we will recognize the good work of the UP Alzheimer's Association.

Gerry O'Beirne has delighted Crystal Falls audiences on two past occasions (once at the SSFD and once at the Crystal Theatre). His mastery of guitar and ukulele is stunning. His song-writing is unique. Gerry is from County Clare, Ireland and he makes a U.S. tour every couple of years.  We feel lucky to have enticed him to the U.P. once again. Visit Gerry's website at: www.gerryobeirne.com and learn more about him.

Between 1:00 and 3:00 PM CT, Bob Arthur will lead an Old-time Music Jam Session at the Dining Hall.  Bring an instrument and play along.  There is NO CHARGE for the Jam Session.

Admission the Second Sunday Folk Dance event is $7/adult and children under 15 are free. This year season tickets are available for $35 (giving admission to all seven Second Sunday Folk Dances). The season tickets are available at Central Arts and Gifts in Iron River, Ben Franklin Store in Crystal Falls, The Music Tree in Iron Mountain, and at the door.

The Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp is located between Iron River and Crystal Falls (in Iron County, Michigan), 2 miles west of Crystal Falls on US-2.  Turn south on Bible Camp Road and drive for less than a quarter mile.  Turn right on Fortune Lake Camp Road and just drive a short distance.  For more information about the folk event check out the website at:  http://www.white-water-associates.com/second.htm or call

The remaining line-up of musicians for the Second Sunday season includes Red Tail Ring (Laurel Premo and Michael Beauchamp in December), Bryan Bowers (January), LJ Booth (February), Stas and Misha (March), and Anne Hills (April).

Carnegie Museum "Atlas Powder Company" Presentation

Tuesday, November 16, from 6:00 - 7:30 pm

A reception and presentation of our current exhibit - "Senter of the Copper Country - The Story of the Atlas Powder Company" Presentation by Bill Haller, author of ATLAS POWDER and exhibit co-creator, to begin at 6:15 pm at the Carnegie Museum in Downtown Houghton.

From 1910 to 1960, the Atlas Powder Company occupied 1800 acres just beyond Dollar Bay, Michigan.  Spiraling throughout the property were over two-hundred structures devoted to creating explosives sold to the local copper mines.  At its peak, more than three-hundred-and-fifty people were employed at Senter, with key personnel living in the small company village at the north end of the complex.  The village homes are still residences today, but a forest has grown up to obscure the remnants of the few structures that were not razed when the plant closed.

In his "first life", Bill Haller founded two manufacturing corporations. With a keen interest in both Mining and Industrial Archaeology, he retired to the Copper Country and now attends MTU on a regular "part-time" basis. He is a researcher and often presenter of A/V historical programs and is the author of ATLAS POWDER - Senter, Michigan 1910-1960. Bill, along with former Senter resident and Atlas employee's son John Backman, created this exhibit which chronicles the history, production, and the final closing of The Atlas Powder Company.  Exhibit includes historical photographs and a small companion display about the Lake Superior Safety Fuse Company that was located in Eagle River from 1862 - 1957.

The Carnegie Museum is located on the corner of Huron & Montezuma in historic downtown Houghton.  For more information, please call (withheld for archive)  .  Admission is free.  Parking is available behind the building or in the City lot across Montezuma Street.

Gymnastics with Jeanie Update (Reposting)-

This was sent out to the parents of "Spring-R-Roo Gymnastics" but in case you missed it or want to know what's going on with the gymnastics group – here it is:

"The students have been very enthusiastic about what they are learning! We have started out with basic skills and terminology and are now starting to introduce skill combinations. The next two weeks the students will be learning some dance skills that are used in the gymnastics routines and they will be working on balance beam. We also will be continuing to work on getting the gym facilities comfortable and convenient for the students and spectators.

To enable program development without raising tuition, we will also be starting a non-profit organization called The Copper Country Gymnastics Association. We encourage the students to participate in the fundraising opportunities to provide a budget for the necessary equipment needed as the students' progress and also to provide a higher quality program to all levels and ages. The organization will own the equipment that is purchased from the proceeds of the fundraisers.

Anyone that would like to participate in the fundraisers would also receive an additional benefit. The money that they earn will be split between the general (equipment) fund and their own personal account. This can be used to subsidize tuition and other expenses related to training while participating in the program.

We will have an ongoing fundraiser which will be a resale / consignment shop at the gym and a Holiday Fundraiser with PartyLite hosted by Beth Anderson. We will be scheduling several informational meetings and pre-holiday parties for the parents to get the fundraiser information so we can get them going in a timely manner for our organization to be successful.

We would also welcome any other ideas or fundraisers that anyone else would like to head up."

Foods will not be for sale, but rather are for everyone to sample and enjoy. Recipes can be shared and copies can be made at the library. Bringing a pumpkin dish is not required for participation in this event.

Projects that the Friends of the Library have done include buying books and other materials, furniture, and the Children's Listening Center. Information on how to become involved with the Friends will be available at the book sale.

From Val (Updates Coordinator):

On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving (November 23rd), my daughter will be having surgery at the Twin Cities Shriners' Hospital. So, pretty much that entire week I will not be here to answer mail or to send out "Updates!" I shall attempt to have everything in order before I leave. Our family would appreciate it if you would keep Jessica in your thoughts and prayers that week.  Thank you.

Update to Swimming @ Finlandia -
Following swimming, when available, our children have had the pleasure of using Finlandia's gymnasium for "Open Gym". The staff of Finlandia has requested that we follow a couple rules when using the gym:

  • Wear shoes or socks. No bare feet will be permitted on the gym floor.
  • Shoes must be clean and non-marking. No snow boots, no dress shoes, etc.
  • Parents should watch the time. We must leave the gym at 2:30 pm.
  • The gym is only available if Finlandia is not using it for their athletics department. If there is a rope or chain across the doorway – the gym is NOT open for our use.

The parents that routinely come to open swim/gym are great about passing these rules on and about helping new-comers understand our agreement with Finlandia. However, the no bare feet rule is relatively new and we wanted to make sure that everyone understood it so no child will have to be asked to sit out on open gym.

Thanks!

Veterans' Day at PLDL –

The Portage Lake District Library will honor all Veterans during the month of November. People are invited to bring a photo of family members who have served or who are currently serving in the armed services for a display in the library. Cake will be served on Veterans Day, November 11, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Everyone is invited. For more information, please visit www.pldl.org.

Gymnastics with Jeanie Update -

Moral Ground Book Tour @ PLDL –

The Portage Lake District Library will host author Michael P. Nelson on Wednesday, November 17, at 7:00 p.m. as he presents "Why it's wrong to wreck the world: What do we owe the future?"

Michael P. Nelson believes that while climate disruption and environmental degradation are scientific and technological issues, they are fundamentally moral issues. "They call us to actions grounded in justice and integrity," Nelson explains.

Drawing on essays from his new co-edited book MORAL GROUND: Ethical Action for a Planet in Peril, Nelson will tell what he and co-editor Kathleen Dean Moore learned when they asked one hundred of the world's visionaries the urgent question, "What do we owe the future?" Nelson and Moore are calling for a national conversation about our personal and collective responsibilities to the future. With guest readers, stories, music by local musicians from the band Rhythm 203, and several philosophical adventures, Nelson shows why technological fixes are not enough. He explores reasons why it's wrong to leave behind a ransacked and dangerously unstable world and suggests novel ideas for how we might act in ways worthy of us as moral beings.

Copies of his book will be available for purchase after the program.

Nelson holds a joint appointment as an associate professor of environmental ethics and philosophy in the Lyman Briggs College, the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, and the Department of Philosophy at Michigan State University. In addition to many essays and articles, he is the co-author or co-editor of four books.  Nelson is also resident philosopher of the Isle Royale wolf/moose project and spends part of each summer working with the animal ecologists on the island. He is the co-creator and co-director of the Conservation Ethics Group, an environmental ethics and problem solving consultancy group. Nelson's research and teaching focus is environmental ethics and philosophy, and he holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Lancaster University, England.

Library programs are free and everyone is invited. For more information, please visit www.pldl.org.

Copper Country Ski Tigers –

In-person registration will be November 13, 2010, 2-4 p.m., at the multi-purpose room at Houghton High School.

The Copper Country Ski Tigers provides young skiers (ages 5-17) with cross-country skiing instruction, fun on the snow and companionship. Everyone from first-time skiers to high school racers receives individual and age-appropriate instruction. Ski Tigers emphasizes families skiing together and having fun.

Beginning in early January, Ski Tigers meet each Saturday, forming groups with similar abilities, led by volunteer coaches. Each coach has a checklist of skills to be taught at each level. As Tigers move through the groups, they also have the option to continue to ski recreationally or to join our racing program.

For more information see: http://www.keweenawtrails.com/skitigers/

Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange –

Regular meetings of the Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange are held on the 3rd Monday of each month from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Portage Lake District Library. The next meeting will be November 15, and everyone is invited to participate.

Each month will feature a different type of food, and November's meeting will focus on gluten-free creations made from bread dough. Participants are welcome to bring their favorite gluten-free sweet rolls, coffee breads, pizza crusts, etc., for sampling and are encouraged to share their recipes. Copies of the recipes will be made at the library. Please list all ingredients used in making foods that are shared at these meetings and identify the brand names of the gluten-free ingredients. Bringing food is not a requirement for attendance.

The Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange is organized by and for those who are interested in or required to follow a gluten-free diet. Gluten-free eating requires the avoidance of all wheat, rye, barley, and oats. Most people find it challenging at first, but are excited to find recipes and foods that are fun and easy to make and tasty to eat. The Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange is an opportunity to share those great recipes and learn from others. Everyone who is interested in learning more about gluten-free eating is encouraged to attend.

This program is free and open to all. For more information, please call a member (withheld for archive).

Class Acts at the Rozsa Center -

FOOLZ!

Two performers: one outwardly calm, the other wound tighter than a spring.  If there's a dim witted innocence about them, it's because their childlike charm permeates their world, placing them where something always seems to go wrong. Blending classic vaudeville with their high-tech optical illusion "NEONMAN", FOOLZ offers up something for everyone.

Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 1pm

Grades: 2-5

Registration needs to be made through Sara (withheld for archive) to attend any of the shows through our homeschool groups (Copper Country Home Educators & Superior Home Educators). Do not contact the Rozsa Center directly as seats have already been reserved for our groups. Also, grade recommendations need to be observed for all performances. The cost is $1 per student due the day of the performance. Seats are limited, so reserve early.

CCHE's Amazon Store –

Copper Country Home Educators has partnered with Amazon.com to create an online store custom made for area homeschoolers. New items are being added daily.

Remember: A portion of each sale goes to help support CCHE and its continued service to local homeschooling families. The items do not cost any more than it would from their site originally. So if you were going to buy it anyway? Why not support our homeschooling community too?

Please let us know if there are any items you would like to see added. I can set up special orders for those items that maybe aren't part of our catalog but that you want to purchase. Just email me the information for what you are looking to buy and I'll email you back what your "Special Order" number is. Then go to our store and click on the appropriate special order to complete the purchase and help CCHE out! Some third party items cannot be added to our store BUT we do earn a smaller percentage if you use our store to get to what you want to buy from the Amazon site. So if we can't add it in our store – it doesn't mean your purchase can't help CCHE out.
