CALUMET ART CENTER AND BOARD MEETING
Along with the fun activites our kids can be busy with at the art center, we thought it would be a good time to have our CCHE quarterly meeting.  It will be a brief meeting starting at 1:30 and open for anyone to attend.  Please feel free to come too!
Ed (withheld for archive) from the Calumet Art Center asked me to pass this info. on to students who contributed artwork to Keweenaw: Art from Our Youth, and anyone else, student or adult, who might be interested in painting a canvas to donate to the art center for a fundraiser to support the winterization and heating of the building so they can remain open all winter to offer very low cost classes to our students on a regular basis (I plan that we can do at least one organized project a month, or biweekly if the interest is there!-- let me know if you are interested in biweekly or monthly art sessions-- I'm looking at Wednesdays at 1pm)

Here's how it works: Artist Jane (withheld for archive) (and maybe others) will be available to mentor our students next Wednesday, September 16th at 1 pm. The 9" X 12" canvas will be provided to our students.  The students will have a couple hours to paint the canvas with whatever great idea they come with or come up with while they are there.

The picture will be left there for a fundraiser sale at the end of the month.  The sale will work like this-- the back of each painting is marked with a number between 1 and 50 (the number of canvases). The works are displayed all together (each painting must be painted so it displays horizontally, not vertically) on a wall, NOT in the order that they are numbered.  Interested persons in the community may then purchase tickets for $25 or $30 each (to be determined yet).  Each ticket has a number on it.  After a certain number of days, ticket holders claim their paintings, only they don't know which painting they'll be getting until they actually receive it.  I thought it sounded like fun, provides an opportunity to show off your work at the Calumet Art Center, and is a great way to help them raise money.  Those persons interested in painting a canvas can email Amy at (withheld for archive)This opportunity was already presented to us in mid August, but so far not many kids have jumped at the chance.  Now we'll have our chance to go there to do this.  There are only 13 canvases left for this first fundraiser.  Ed (withheld for archive) is ordering more canvases so if there are more interested kids, we all can still paint and leave them for the next fundraiser!

The only thing we need to bring is some acrylic paint-- Walmart sells the small bottles of paint (those 1 or 1.5" diameter by 3 or 4" tall squeeze bottles in their craft section).  If you have stencils or stamps, those are sometimes fun too.  I saw one painting tonite that was decorated with ribbon & fabric, too.  Pieces of sponge, ferns, rags, or even food can be fun to use to paint the background or even the main picture with-- bring along anything that strikes your fancy!

I've done this acrylic painting on canvas with my kids at home-- after you do it once, you'll end up needing to do it many times because it is such a fun way to paint- so you'll have plenty more chances to use that paint.

Let me know if you have any questions.
RSVP to me if you are interested !!
UPDATE:In addition to the fundraiser paintings, for the other kids who might not be up to painting one of them, there will also be clay tile/trivet making and collage work (donation of $1 or $2 would be good for both of those projects).  There will also be additional canvases (suggested donation of $3 to cover the cost of the canvas).

In addition to bringing the acrylic paints and fun things to paint with, if you have some paint brushes, magazines, glue, glue sticks, crayons and scissors to use, that would help out a lot.

We should consider donating money to cover the costs of the supplies that we use on Wednesday, but don't let costs prevent you from attending- whatever works for your family is perfect.  Everyone is welcome-- our kids will have so much fun.
