FOURTH THURSDAY IN HISTORY:
Saving Money and Saving History: Historic Tax Credits Workshop
Do you own an old house or commercial building in a historic district, and
is it in need of repair? Come learn how you can offset the costs of those
repairs, regular maintenance, and rehabilitation by taking advantage of
historic tax credits for owners of historic properties within national
historic districts. As a fitting prelude to the evening's main program,
recipients of the Village of Calumet's Preservation Awards will be honored,
followed by a brief intermission. After the talk, everyone is invited to
tour a historic home on Portland Street in Calumet that has benefited from
the tax credit program. Come and see how your property could as well!
This special program will begin by recognizing several property owners who
have helped preserve the historic character of Calumet and Laurium.
Representatives from the Coppertown Mining Museum and Calumet Township will
be on hand to accept their awards for their dedicated, long-standing
efforts to preserve historic industrial buildings. Tony and Janice
Galerneau at Rowe Furniture are receiving an award for their Calumet
storefront rehabilitation, as are Barbara Piper and David Swykert for going
the extra mile to ensure their residential rehabilitation project
complemented their historic neighborhood in Laurium.
Next, Brian Lijewski from Michigan's State Historic Preservation Office and
Nan Taylor of the Michigan Historic Preservation Network will explain how
tax credits can help you offset the costs of maintaining historic
properties within national historic districts. This applies to many
neighborhoods in the Keweenaw, including several within Calumet, Laurium,
Mason, and Hancock.
After their presentation, attendees are invited to tour a historic home on
Portland Street in Calumet – located within the boundaries of Keweenaw
National Historical Park – to see how tax credits have been used to offset
the costs of rehabilitating a historic home. The property owners will be on
hand to share their experience with the tax credit program, and Lijewski
and Taylor will be available to provide additional information about how to
take advantage of this program. The house is located at 811 Portland
Street, and is approximately a half mile from park headquarters.
This event will be held on Thursday September 24th, 2009 at Keweenaw
National Historical Park Headquarters, located at 25970 Red Jacket Road in
Calumet. The evening will begin with the awards ceremony at 6:15 p.m., and
the presentation will start at 7:00 p.m. The historic home tour will follow
the presentation; attendees should anticipate meeting at 811 Portland
Street in Calumet at 8:00 p.m.
This evening is part of the Fourth Thursday in History speaker series
sponsored by Keweenaw National Historical Park. The Fourth Thursday in
History series arranges public presentations on important aspects of Copper
Country and regional history, including techniques for historic
preservation. Presentations are scheduled in venues throughout the Keweenaw
Peninsula, particularly at historic sites associated with specific topics.

FOOTBALL FOR 9 AND UNDERS
My husband, Mike, is wondering how much interest there would be in getting kids together for some informal football this fall. It could be just a one time occasion or more, depending on schedules/preferences. He's thinking of Saturday mornings--location to be determined by participants. He's thinking of keeping it from ages 5-9. Any interest besides our 2 boys? =D

HOMESCHOOL DRAMA CLUB
Some CCHS homeschoolers may not have received this information (and some may have received this info twice--sorry!), so I would like make sure that everyone knows that the homeschool drama club will be having a planning meeting this coming Tuesday at 2:45 at the Calumet Art Center. For those who may not be familiar with it, the drama club is something we organized last year, in order to give homeschooled students (all ages) an opportunity to work with a larger group of other homeschoolers and to have plenty of opportunities to speak/act in front of an audience. It turned out to be a lot of fun, and we put on a performance at the end of the school year that was quite spectacular! Interested parents and students are encouraged to attend. We will address the following questions:
-Who is interested in participating this year?
-When would you like to start meeting? (late Oct.? January, like last year? March? or--?)
-When/where?
-What would you like to do?

Directions to the Calumet Art Center:
Go north on US 41, through the first stoplight, straight through the next flashing yellow light. Turn left at the next (2nd) flashing yellow light, heading towards downtown Calumet (this is Red Jacket Rd.). The Calumet Colosseum is on the right. The art center, a light grey church building, is straight ahead, just before the street curves sharply to the right and becomes 5th Street. There is a street that goes to the left in front of the art center that you can park on. There is a bulletin board/sign out front of the church with "Calumet Art Center" on it. It is right across the street from the old St. Anne's Church, which I beieve is now the Keweenaw Heritage Center.

CONCERT AT THE LIBRARY
Lindsay Tomasic and Jesse Fitzpatrick Perform at Portage Library
Fans of singer/songwriters Lindsay Tomasic and Jesse Fitzpatrick will be treated to another great concert when the duo performs at the Portage Lake District Library on Monday, October 5, at 7 p.m.
Born in the Copper Country, Lindsay and Jesse have been making music together for over three decades. From the 1970's to the Millennium, the music of their band, TREES, has stood the test of time. Their intricately woven vocal harmonies coupled with exquisite acoustic production continues to please audiences. Each year, Lindsay and Jesse reunite and work on new music. They have a faithful following in the Copper Country as well as in Ann Arbor.
In 1987 Lindsay began a solo career as a full time working musician and producer in Los Angeles. Since that time, she has performed at many signature venues including The Troubadour and ASCAP's notable showcase, "Quiet on the Set." Other selected stages include The Ark in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the Cayuga Vault in Santa Cruz, California, supplemented by radio guest spots on several California radio stations.
Lindsay has opened for other artists including Janis Ian, Kenny Rankin, and Jesse Colin Young. She has also toured as a guitarist and backing vocalist for Lauren Wood. As a songwriter and composer, she created the theme song The Roseanne Show and performed live on Soap Talk after the success of her songs as featured on One Life to Live. She has also contributed music for network and cable dramas, comedies, and reality shows including Desperate Housewives, The L Word, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Malcolm in the Middle, and the feature film Wild Hogs. An accomplished producer and engineer, she is the owner of Datolite Recording, a full media production facility, and Frameworks Music, a world renowned production music catalog.
This concert is free and everyone is invited to attend.
