The Calumet Art Center

An exciting opportunity exists in our community that will provide great experiences for our homeschool students.  A newly formed Calumet Art Center will be opening in the next couple weeks and they need our help in getting the former Community Church building in Calumet cleaned up so they can start holding classes there.

I've talked with the Executive Director, Mr. Ed Gray (of Ed Gray Studio in Calumet).  I've explained that the homeschool students would love to take part in art classes but often find it difficult to find a location to do them at.  Many local artists are going to be holding classes here for students.  I also see the opportunity to use this building for those occasions when we want to get a few kids together to learn how to sew; make valentines; work with a tutor; or some of those other educational things we want to do with a group that ends up being too large to host at our homes.

THIS IS OUR CHANCE to get in on the ground floor, take some ownership and pride in this new building and help get it cleaned up.  I ask that everyone who can come on Monday June 15th from 5pm until 9:30 pm to help clean, please do.  By volunteering our time in this cleanup effort, we make our interest in this facility genuine.

Things that need to get done on Monday night are:
vacuuming the sanctuary carpet, sweeping the wood floor, dusting the window sills, furnishings and pews, and washing glass on cabinets.  Outside there are steps and sidewalks to sweep, garbage to pull out of the bushes, bushes to trim, and weeds to pull in the front garden.

Please come with your vacuums, brooms & dustpans, dustrags & cleaners, windex & rags, garbage bags, rakes, clippers, and string for bundling up trimmed branches.

I know this is short notice- I just learned of this cleaning bee this morning!
Refreshments will be provided.

Please RSVP or call with any questions over the weekend to Amy (withheld for archive).  Please also feel free to just show up anytime even if you don't RSVP.

Location:
The church is located on 5th Street in Calumet (US41 to the 2nd blinker light – stoplight, blinker light, blinker light—turn left .  Go past the Calumet Armory/Coloseum.  On your left just a little ways past the Coloseum is the church.  There is parking on the side street in front of the church.)  The church is white with a green roof and a sandstone foundation.

There will be more work needed in the church basement and I will send out another email with a request for more cleaning help.  Maybe we could do it in a later morning during the week for a couple hours… and then head to the beach?
