MUSIC OPPORTUNITES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here are some exciting opportunites:
   1. As you know, the new Calumet Arts Center is very interested in working w/homeschooling families.  The plan is for arts classes on a drop in basis.  At least 22 artists have signed up as mentors.
  Musically, we will be putting together some groups, an organ tour or two, etc.  I'll get an interest sign-up sheet put up this week.  Currently, there are available individual lessons in piano, voice and organ.
   2.  The Keweenaw Heritage Center at St. Anne's is going to be very active musically this summer.  The exhibits are nifty!  We are looking for musicians for every afternoon, 2:00-3:00.  (I am playing most Fridays!)  If there are homeschoolers who would like to get a program together, contact me, Kathleen (withheld for archive)
   On "Musical Monday" evenings, different music and classes will be offered.  First Fridays in Calumet will include harp music on July 3 and organ music on August 7.  The Celebration Concert of the Barckhoff pipe organ will be given on Wednesday, August 5.
Make a list of items you are selling, with your name at the top, and a numbered list of items with the asking price of each. To the items (on the inside front cover of books) attach a 3x5 card, writing on it your name, the name of the item, the asking price, and the list number. Drop off the list and items at 9:00 Saturday June 27 at Evangel Baptist Church on College Ave. in Houghton. It would be great if you could stay and help man the sale. Portage Library Offers More Summer Programs
The Portage Lake District Library continues to offer summer programs for all ages and interests.
Pete Olson of Tapiola will demonstrate how to make traditional Finnish woodcarvings and crafts on Monday, July 6, at 7:00 p.m. Olson, who has been woodcarving for many years, went to Finland to learn the techniques for making Finnish fan birds, the Joulukuusi (shaved tree), the Toumaan Risti (St. Thomas Cross), splint wood baskets, and  more. He will bring the tools he uses to turn blocks of cedar into beautiful and finely detailed works of art and show participants how the crafts are made.
If you've ever wondered how to ride a unicycle, Jason, Bob, and Ben will demonstrate riding techniques outside the library's main door on Thursday, July 9, at 6:30 p.m. Afterwards, follow them into the community room at 7:00 p.m. for the "Jason, Bob, and Ben Juggling Show," where participants will be involved in an interactive comedy juggling performance. Children will play juggling games with the trio and watch as they toss balls, bean bags, rings, clubs, and bowling balls into the air.
On Saturday, July 11, at 12:30 p.m. the 1930 Marx Brothers film Animal Crackers will be shown in the community room. Considered an absolute classic, it is filled with mayhem and zaniness when a valuable painting goes missing during a party in honor of a famous African explorer. Ariel Lake will open the show with "A Harpo," a short vaudeville act celebrating the humor and antics of Harpo Marx. This program is suitable for children and adults, and popcorn will be served.
Isle Royale National Park Interpretive Ranger Jordan Kibat will offer a special "Wetland Friends" Storytime on Thursday, July 16, at 10:15 a.m. Children will listen to stories about animals that live in wetlands, watch a short slide show about wetland animals, and place wetland animals in their homes on the Isle Royale map. They will also watch a short slide show about amphibians and play an amphibian trivia game.
Maria Sliva and the Houghton High School Key Club continue to offer Storytime every Monday and on alternating Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. All children are welcome to listen to stories and do a project afterwards.
Everyone is invited to attend library programs and presentations are free. For more information please call the library at 482-4570 or visit www.pldl.org
