Corn Maze at Somero's Farm – FULL DETAILS

After a great response, the consensus for most was that Friday afternoon would work and according to weather.com it is suppose to be sunny. So, I contacted Somero's Farm and we figured out a time. Friday, October 8th at 1pm for the corn maze (and associated activities) – cost is $2.50 a person. Remember there are pumpkins for sale. Also, remember that the local school districts our out on that day, so there may be other children at there as well but that time of day should cut down on some of the crowds.

In order to facilitate parking – if anyone's willing to car pool or to offer to drive please contact me. I know I will have 3 spots available in my van. Depending on where you live I can pick you up or meet you somewhere. There is no requirement to carpool but it would help.

Thanks – Val ccheupdates@gmail.com

Please note – if you RSVP'd, thank you! If you didn't – you can still come. I just needed some basic numbers to ensure we'd get the ½ off for a group. So, all you have to do is meet us there (unless you are planning on carpooling).

Also, while I'm updating the list:

Chess Club

We will be having Home School Chess Club the second and fourth Friday of each month when it is not a holiday time.

October 8 & 22, November 12, December 10, January 14 & 28, February 11 & 25, March 11 & 25, April 8, May 13

It will be at Bethany Baptist Church in Dollar Bay starting at 3:00, and we will have some time in the gym after we play chess. We usually end around 4:30.

This is for all ages and all abilities. We hope to see lots of players - the faithful ones from last year and new players too. If someone does not know how to play, there are people there to teach the game.

Any questions please contact Sharon (withheld for archive) or Judy (withheld for archive)

Second Sunday Folk Dance Series

The Second Sunday Folk Dance Series begins its 25th year on Saturday, October 9. The Saturday date allows the folk dance to be part of the Fortune Lake Fall Fiesta (quilt and art auction, chili cook-off, and other more).

As usual, the Second Sunday Folk Dance will begin at 4:00 PM CT with White Water providing a short opening set. Michigan's treasured singer-songwriter Joel Mabus will then perform the featured concert. After the concert portion of the evening, snacks and beverages will be available (at no charge) and the dance begins with The Front Parlor Dance Band playing tunes and Bette Premo providing dance instruction and calling (always easy and gently taught). The last song of the evening ends at 7PM CT.

Joel Mabus has been a guest at several of the folk dances in the past 25 years. We are proud that he will be part of this special year of music. Joel is a wizard with stringed instruments and combines this with smart song-writing and great interpretations of traditional music. A mainstay on the folk circuit these past 30 years, Joel has 20 albums to his credit; the latest is "No Worries Now."

Between 1:00 and 3:00 PM CT, Bob Arthur will lead an Old-time Music Jam Session at the Fir Cabin. Bring an instrument and play along. There is NO CHARGE for the Jam Session.

Admission the Second Sunday Folk Dance event is $7/adult and children under 15 are free. This year season tickets are available for $35 (giving admission to all seven Second Sunday Folk Dances. The season tickets are available at Central Arts and Gifts in Iron River, Ben Franklin Store in Crystal Falls, The Music Tree in Iron Mountain, and at the door.

The Fortune Lake Camp is located between Iron River and Crystal Falls (in Iron County, Michigan), 2 miles west of Crystal Falls on US-2. Turn south on Bible Camp Road and drive for less than a quarter mile. Turn right on Fortune Lake Camp Road and just drive a short distance. For more information about the folk event check out the website at: http://www.white-water-associates.com/second.htm .

The remaining line-up of musicians for the Second Sunday season includes Gerry O'Beirne (November), Red Tail Ring (Laurel Premo and Michael Beauchamp in December), Bryan Bowers (January), LJ Booth (February), Stas and Misha (March), and Anne Hills (April).
