Corn Maze at Somero's Farm - TODAY

There should be a lot of families coming out to enjoy the beautiful weather at Somero's Farm. Remember the cost is ½ price ($2.50 per a person) for our group. If you go at a different time/date – you'll have to pay the full price of $5.00 a person. There will be pumpkins for sale as well. In addition to the large maze there is a smaller maze for the little ones. The time for this event is 1pm. Directions to Somero's are as follows:

From Dollar Bay, turn up the hill on Airport Park Rd. Somero's farm's on the right. Airport Park Rd has a green sign on the highway and is on the Hancock side of Dollar Bay.

You can also get to Airport Park Rd from Hwy 41 between Hancock and Calumet. The Airport Park Rd is right before the rd to the Airport (NOT the road that the airport's actually on) when coming from Hancock. Turn down the hill (right if coming from Hancock). That way you have to drive down Airport Park Rd for several miles. Then Somero's is on the left.

You can't miss Somero's once you're on the correct rd.

Chess Club - TODAY

We will be having Home School Chess Club the second and fourth Friday of each month when it is not a holiday time.

October 8 & 22, November 12, December 10, January 14 & 28, February 11 & 25, March 11 & 25, April 8, May 13

It will be at Bethany Baptist Church in Dollar Bay starting at 3:00, and we will have some time in the gym after we play chess. We usually end around 4:30.

This is for all ages and all abilities. We hope to see lots of players - the faithful ones from last year and new players too. If someone does not know how to play, there are people there to teach the game.

Any questions please contact Sharon (withheld for archive) or Judy (withheld for archive)

Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange

Monday, October 18
6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Portage Lake District Library

Regular meetings of the Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange will be held on the 3rd Monday of each month. Each month will feature a different type of food, and October's meeting will focus on gluten-free bread. Participants are welcome to bring a loaf of their favorite gluten-free bread for sampling and are encouraged to share their recipes. Copies of the recipes will be made at the library. Please list all ingredients used in making foods that are shared at these meetings and identify the brand names of the gluten-free ingredients. Bringing food is not a requirement for attendance.

The Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange is organized by and for those who are interested in or required to follow a gluten-free diet. Gluten-free eating requires the avoidance of all wheat, rye, barley, and oats. Most people find it challenging at first, but are excited to find recipes and foods that are fun and easy to make and tasty to eat. The Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange is an opportunity to share those great recipes and learn from others. Everyone who is interested in learning more about gluten-free eating is encouraged to attend.

This program is free and open to all. For more information, please call a member of the group at (withheld for archive). You may also visit www.pldl.org.

Letters About Literature

Once again this year, The Library of Congress is sponsoring the Letters About Literature writing contest. We invite young readers in grades 4 - 12 to write a personal letter to an author explaining how the author's work somehow changed their view of the world and themselves. This is a terrific opportunity for children to practice their reflective writing skills and at the same time explore some personal relationships they have had with authors in the past. Our website offers free lesson plans, writing samples, assessment checklists. We hope you can help us spread the word to encourage more young homeschooled children to participate.

CCHE's Parents' Night Out

Copper Country Home Educators will hold its quarterly Parent's Night Out on Tuesday October, 14th at 6:30pm at the Portage Lake District Library. This is a great opportunity to meet other homeschooling parents! There will be curriculum discussion (topic to be announced) where parents are encouraged to bring samples of curriculum, websites or resources they use. (From personal experience – remember to bring a pen and paper as you'll want to jot down suggestions!)

Parents' Night Out will be followed by CCHE's quarterly board meeting, which is also open to the public. If you have any suggestions or just want to know what's going on with our group – you are welcome to stay for that as well! Please email ccheupdates@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Mont Ripley Color Tours
Mont Ripley Ski Hill on M-26 in Hancock will hold their annual Fall Color Chair Lift Rides on Saturday, Oct. 9, and Sunday, Oct. 10. For more information, call the hill at (withheld for archive).

Open Swim – REMINDER

Open Swim at Finlandia University, every Thursday, 1-2pm ($2 per a person; $6 for a family, with possible gym time afterwards until 2:30). We've had an incredible turn-out. Parents can swim too or enjoy some time chatting with other adults. This is an excellent way to get to know other homeschoolers while giving the kids some exercise and group activities!

Community Comments/Questions:

Edith (withheld for archive) is still looking for a home for her set of Funk & Wagnall's encyclopedias from
1973.
There's nothing like having the actual research materials in your hands! Especially as we teach our children about the value of knowing HOW to find the answers! She's offering them for free to any homeschooling family that can use them. Just email Edith at (withheld for archive)

From Val (CCHE Updates! Coordinator)

I received an email from a travel company that offers group travel opportunities for homeschoolers (and other educational groups). I have no interest in coordinating something like this right now and it's not something that can be done on an individual basis. Anyhow – if someone wants to look into this company and is interested in coordinating a homeschool trip, check it out:

http://www.eftours.com/educational-tours/pricetours/

Please note – this is not an endorsement of this company. CCHE has no association with the company – we are just passing along the information in case a homeschooling parent is interested in coordinating such a trip.

A request - please let me know if the Updates! look funny in your email account (multiple fonts and odd spacing). I receive the Updates! in my personal email account, here at gmail and at our blog - each seems to format differently for some reason and the one I get in my personal email account looks really messy. Is anyone else experiencing this? Thanks.
