SKI FOR THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
I was wondering if your homeschool students and families would be interested in a community service event that includes outdoor physical activity and fun for a whole family?

Thank you.

Ski for Heart  2010  Press Release
Plans are underway for the annual Ski for the Heart of our Community event at Swedetown Trails in Calumet, Michigan, which will be held on Saturday, February 13. This fundraiser for people of all athletic abilities helps Omega House and the Copper Island Ski Club.

Omega House is a hospice home offering compassionate care for people who are terminally ill and lack the support and resources to live out their final days on their own.  All in need are welcomed at Omega House, regardless of ability to pay.  Trained staff and hospice volunteers provide loving care to residents and their families.

Copper Island Ski Club operates Swedetown Recreational Area, owned by Calumet Township.  Summer recreation includes hiking and biking trails. Winter recreation includes 30k of cross-country ski trails groomed for skate and classic skiing (8 k are lit for night skiing), 5 k back country and 8 k snowshoe trails, as well as hills for sledding and snowboarding.  New this winter will be dog trails!  The Chalet offers warming room and a food concession.
Last year 144 participants skied or snow shoed and raised $9,587. This is a great event for those who want to support two noteworthy local causes and enjoy the outdoors in good company.  Athletes can join a team or participate as an individual. Refreshments and a daily trail pass are included in the minimum $10 donation. For more information call Swedetown Trails 906-337-1170 or the Omega House 906-482-4438.

OPEN SWIM AT FINLANDIA

Open Swim will resume this Thursday, Jan. 7th at Finlandia.  However, the gym will not be available due to basketball teams practicing this week.  The cost is $2 per person or $6 per family payable to the lifeguard.  Parents are also welcome to swim.  If schools are closed due to the weather assume no open swim that day.  No sign up is needed.
Note:  The issue with the lights has been addressed and hopefully won't be a problem any longer.
 POSSIBLE SEWING CLASSES
Below is a note from a homeschool mom from lower Michigan who is willing to travel to our area and offer sewing classes.  If there is anyone who is interested in being her local contact or if you are interested in her classes, please contact her personally.  All of the info is below.
My name is Lorna (withheld for archive) and I live in the Metro-Detroit area.  I am a former home schooling parent of 3 grown children.  I schooled for 8 years and taught grades K -12 in that time period.  Home schooling has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my adult life (after the kids being born!)!!  I am now a professional seamstress and former Chrysler employee.  I teach sewing here in my local area.
I am contacting you today because I have a friend who lives in the Mohawk area who has expressed a desire to learn to sew.   I am considering a trip to the area this winter to teach her to sew and got to thinking there might be others in the area who would be interested in sewing classes while I am in the area.  Would your group be interested in something like this?  Would you be open to having me contact you by phone to discuss it?  I would love to chat with you about it!
 Thanks so much!

I know of a possible 2 churches in the Mohawk area which could be used for classes.  Are they accessible to your group?  Could you give me a general idea of ages of this group?  Age appropriate classes will be offered depending on the needs of the group.
I am considering the middle of February to hold these classes.  Here is a general idea of what could/will be taught
*How to Maintain Your Sewing Machine - 30 min class - $5/person
*Sewing with Kids - ages 7-10 - 60 min class - $10/person
*Clothing Repair and Basic Alterations - 2 hr class - $30/person
*Making Fleece PJs - 2 hour classs - $30/person plus materials
Each family would need to bring their own sewing machine and materials to the class.  Classes could be held in the morning/ afternoon or possibly evening.
