Gardening Through the Winter

The Portage Lake District Library will offer the fourth program of its gardening through the winter series. Master Gardener Lynn Watson will present "Sun, Soil, and Seeds" on Thursday, April 9, at 7:00 p.m. in the community room.

Watson will teach participants how to get the most from their gardening efforts. She will show how good garden beginnings start with site selection and explain how to plan flowers and vegetables in relation to minimum and maximum sun and shade orientation. For those who have a garden challenged site, she will explain the technique of vertical gardening and show how to grow vegetables up rather than out. Watson will also discuss the advantages of container gardening if a poor site location exists.

She will also demonstrate how to do your own preliminary soil analysis using soil, water, and a jar, and discuss the characteristics of good soil foundations: content, texture, drainage, additions, fertilizers, and mulch.

Watson will also explain what the information on seed packages describes. Participants will learn how to save seeds and will know what heirloom seeds are. Watson will also teach the benefits and beauty of inter-planting flowers and vegetables together in your garden.

There will be hand-outs and all garden enthusiasts are invited.

Get Ready for the History Smackdown!

Built in 1848, this lighthouse was the first government built aid to
navigation on the Keweenaw Peninsula. Can you name this lighthouse? If you
said the Copper Harbor lighthouse, give yourself a pat on the back – you're
right!

Seventeen teams from eight Copper Country-area high schools will be asked
questions much like this at the 2009 Local History Smackdown to be held the
evening of April 23rd. The team that answers the most questions correctly –
the last team standing at the end of the competition – is the Smackdown
champion.

The Smackdown offers students a fun and exciting opportunity to showcase
their knowledge of the history and geography of Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw
and Ontonagon counties. Its format is similar to a spelling bee: teams of
four players are asked timed, short-answer questions about local history
topics, which increase in difficulty as the rounds go higher. The contest
features a double-elimination format: each team is given the right to pass
on one question, but two wrong answers and teams are out of play. Come and
cheer on the competitors!

This free event will take place at the historic Calumet Theatre in Calumet
at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, and will kick off the 2009 Fourth
Thursday in History series sponsored by Keweenaw National Historical Park.

other details about the event will also be available at

They are all free for TeenPacters--including your hotel. Parents are welcome to come along as well. While the LI School is not run by TeenPact, I think they do the best job of anyone in teaching students the basics of campaign technology. Recommended age is 15 and up.
