Letters and Literature writing contest
Information about a writing contest (cash prize and cash grant to a library) called "Letters about Literature" may be found at www (dot) loc (dot) gov/letters. The topic is to write a letter about a piece of literature that has affected you. I saw this on a poster at Calumet High. Kathleen

Portage Library Hosts Marx Brothers Film

Everyone with a sense of humor is invited to the Portage Lake District Library on Saturday, November 22, to view what is considered one of the Marx Brothers greatest works. The film Monkey Business will be shown at 1:00 p.m. to commemorate the 115th anniversary of the birthday of Harpo Marx. Popcorn, birthday cake, and ice cream will be served.

Ariel Lake will open the program with "A Harpo Celebration: Remembering Harpo Marx on His Birthday" and will share a few stories from the actor's life.

Monkey Business tells the story of the adventures that befall Groucho, Chico, Harpo, and Zeppo while they are stowaways on a ship to America. This is the first Marx Brothers film written especially for the screen, and it was a phenomenal success when it opened in 1931. The movie is filled with hilarity, pranks, jokes, and songs and includes a cameo appearance by Sam Marx, father of the Marx Brothers.

This program is suitable for children and adults. Everyone is invited to attend library events and presentations are free. For more information please call (withheld for archive).

Art Co-Op
Due to a wonderful response, our Art Co-op will officially begin in January. Hooray!! More details regarding that will be forth-coming as we solidify them. Until then, here is a fun option (that is likely to be on-going) that you might like to take advantage of.
Art Co-op: Fiber Whims Open Studio
Jenny at Fiber Whims in Chassell is willing to host an open studio with a "make and take" for our Art Co-op on Monday, Nov. 24 from 10 a.m. to Noon. Her space can fit 6 to 10 kids and the project (a felted mug rug) is tailored to a 6 year-old skill level. Children slightly older or younger are welcome to participate as well. Jenny needs 3 more kids for the first session and is willing to open a second session if the first fills up: Monday, Dec. 8 from 10 a.m. to Noon. The cost is $5 per child.
Please contact (withheld for archive) to sign up.
