Keweenaw Natural and Attachment Parenting (KNAP)

Keweenaw Natural and Attachment Parenting (KNAP) is a resource for Keweenaw-area parents who are interested in practicing attachment parenting and embracing a natural lifestyle for their families. 

Examples of attachment and natural parenting include: natural childbirth (incl. homebirth), breastfeeding, babywearing, sharing a family bed, elimination communication (diaper-free babies), cloth diapering, vaccine choice, alternative medicine, gentle discipline, homeschooling, healthy eating (unprocessed, local, organic), and green living (avoiding chemicals, living sustainably). 

Starting in January, the KNAP group will host monthly potluck-style gatherings so that parents can socialize, share information, and support one another on their parenting journeys. Meetings will be held on the first Thursday of every month, 6-8 pm, at the First United Methodist Church in Hancock. Our first meeting will be on Thursday, January 6th. All families interested in any aspects of attachment and natural parenting are welcome!

"Mathops" Provider Requesting Assistance

"Mathops" is a free Algebra/math program that has been featured in our "Updates!" a few times before. On January 3^rd, CCHE received the following email and I felt it appropriate to pass it on:

 

"I am sorry for sending you an email, but we need your help.  We provide free algebra programming and have come across an opportunity to submit a proposal for a government grant to add enhancements to our algebra product, www.mathops.com.  We are working with a local university on this proposal.  These enhancements will help home school students.  The proposal is due the second week in January.

In order to receive funding, we need letters from current customers regarding their thoughts of our product.

If you know someone who is using our product, please pass this email on to them.

If we use their letter in any way, we will give them a one year subscription to our commercial free side.

Letters need to be one page or less, with at least one inch margins, in font 12 or larger (don't you just love the government!).  They should include a brief introduction of who is writing the letter and how they use Mathops, information on their opinion of Mathops, and possibly something about how it has helped their child.   If they'd like to add something about how they'd like to see the product expanded that would help too.

Second Sunday Folk Dance Series -

 

Dear Friends,

The January Second Sunday Folk Dance Series presents autoharp virtuoso Bryan Bowers on January 9.  The concert begins at 4pm CT with hosts Bette and Dean Premo (White Water) performing a short concert set with special performers Carry and Emma Dlutkowski.  The Bowers' concert follows immediately. After the concert portion of the evening, snacks and beverages will be available (at no charge) and the dance begins with The Front Parlor Dance Band playing tunes and Bette Premo providing dance instruction and calling (always easy and gently taught). The last song of the evening ends at 7PM CT.

Between 1:00 and 3:00 PM CT, Bob Arthur will lead an Old-time Music Jam Session at the Dining Hall.  Bring an instrument and play along.  There is NO CHARGE for the Jam Session.

The January Second Sunday Folk Dance has been a regular stop on Bryan Bowers' midwinter tour. His creativity and talent have won him induction into Frets Magazine's First Gallery of the Greats (other in the gallery includeChet Atkins, David Grisman, Stephan Grappelli, Itzhak Perlman, Tony Rice, and Mark O'Connor). Bowers can be zany on stage while playing a song like "Four Wet Pigs" and follow this with the gentle reverence of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken."

Admission to the SSFD event is $7/adult and children under 15 are free. The Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp is located between Iron River and Crystal Falls (in Iron County, Michigan), 2 miles west of Crystal Falls on US-2.  Turn south on Bible Camp Road and drive for less than a quarter mile.  Turn right on Fortune Lake Camp Road and just drive a short distance.  For more information about the folk event check out the website at:  http://www.white-water-associates.com/second.htm or call (withheld for archive).

Raise money to keep others warm and have fun doing it! Come out and cross-country Ski or snowshoe on Saturday, January 15th between 10 am and 3pm at the Listening Inn B & B, 9 miles north of Crystal Falls on Clark Road, off of Hwy 141.

New Art Gallery in Ontonagon –

For those of you that live near Ontonagon – I thought I'd pass along a little good news: the backroom of the Senior Citizens' Center is being transformed into an art gallery. River Street, at 300 Lake St. will house Frank (withheld for archive) black and white pieces initially but the plans are to display other artists' works. Finlandia's Pool Closed -

As many of you heard – Finlandia has closed its pool until further notice. Right now, Finlandia's on winter break so we will not have any new information for a couple weeks. Here's what Finlandia's website has to say:

College Night at Finlandia University

Mark your 2011 calendars.

College Night will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Finnish American Heritage Center at Finlandia University on Wednesday, January 26^, 2011.

 We welcome you and other high school students and families to our campus to talk with professors about academic programs, financial aid, and admissions. It's also a great time to inquire about enrolling your student (or yourself) in just one class!
