Drama Club (TODAY)

Attention drama club fans and persons interested in learning more about the homeschoolers' drama club!  Please mark your calendars:

Regular meetings will begin on Tuesday, January 25th, 3-4(:30) at Bethany Baptist Church in Dollar Bay.  Please bring suggestions/ideas/questions/scripts/etc, and anything else for us to discuss in preparation for our 2011 drama club performance, which will as usual take place in late April or early May.  Newcomers are welcome and encouraged to attend!  This is a great (and fun) way for your student(s) to have the opportunity to perform in front of an audience and to work together with other homeschoolers to plan, organize and put together an evening of entertainment for friends and family

This year, to make it easier for those families with both older (ages 10 or 11 through high school) and younger students (pre-k through 10 or 11),  both groups will be meeting at the same time and place (on Tuesdays at Bethany at 3 pm), in different rooms within the church building.  One item we will discuss at our first meeting is whether the younger students will meet each week or every other week as in previous years.

Looking forward to seeing you all!  If you have questions, please call Margo (withheld for archive).

Open Swimming Returns

1-2pm on Thusdays ($2 per a person; $6 for a family, with possible gym time afterwards until 2:30). Parents can swim too or enjoy some time chatting with other adults. This is an excellent way to get to know other homeschoolers while giving the kids some exercise and group activities! Remember that in order to participate in the Open Gym the child must wear clean gym shoes or socks. Per Finlandia's rules – bare feet are not permitted.

Portage Lake Public Library Isle Royal Series -

The Portage Lake District Library hosts "Discover Isle Royale," a series of monthly programs that are sponsored by the Isle Royale Institute and Isle Royale National Park.

On Thursday, January 27, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., fisheries biologist Jay Glase will present "Fish, Frogs and Fleas? Aquatic Species at Isle Royale."  More than 75% of Isle Royale National Park is underwater and participants are invited to dive in with Glase to look at the diversity of aquatic species at the island. They will explore water habitats from the deep water realm of the lake trout to shoreline splash pool homes of chorus frogs, and investigate the possible threats to these underwater ecosystems.

Glase has been the National Park Service Midwest regional fishery biologist for eight years. He has conducted fisheries and aquatic investigations at all of the parks and lakeshores of Lakes Superior and Michigan, as well as at Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota and on the St. Croix National Scenic River in Wisconsin/Minnesota.

Library presentations are free and everyone is welcome. For more information, please visit www.pldl.org.
