Drama Club (TODAY)

Attention drama club fans and persons interested in learning more about the homeschoolers' drama club!  Please mark your calendars:

Regular meetings will begin on Tuesday, January 25th, 3-4(:30) at Bethany Baptist Church in Dollar Bay.  Please bring suggestions/ideas/questions/scripts/etc, and anything else for us to discuss in preparation for our 2011 drama club performance, which will as usual take place in late April or early May.  Newcomers are welcome and encouraged to attend!  This is a great (and fun) way for your student(s) to have the opportunity to perform in front of an audience and to work together with other homeschoolers to plan, organize and put together an evening of entertainment for friends and family

This year, to make it easier for those families with both older (ages 10 or 11 through high school) and younger students (pre-k through 10 or 11),  both groups will be meeting at the same time and place (on Tuesdays at Bethany at 3 pm), in different rooms within the church building.  One item we will discuss at our first meeting is whether the younger students will meet each week or every other week as in previous years.

Looking forward to seeing you all!  If you have questions, please call Margo (withheld for archive).

Open Swimming Returns

1-2pm on Thusdays ($2 per a person; $6 for a family, with possible gym time afterwards until 2:30). Parents can swim too or enjoy some time chatting with other adults. The Portage Lake District Library hosts "Discover Isle Royale," a series of monthly programs that are sponsored by the Isle Royale Institute and Isle Royale National Park.

On Thursday, January 27, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., fisheries biologist Jay Glase will present "Fish, Frogs and Fleas? Aquatic Species at Isle Royale."  More than 75% of Isle Royale National Park is underwater and participants are invited to dive in with Glase to look at the diversity of aquatic species at the island. They will explore water habitats from the deep water realm of the lake trout to shoreline splash pool homes of chorus frogs, and investigate the possible threats to these underwater ecosystems.

Glase has been the National Park Service Midwest regional fishery biologist for eight years. He has conducted fisheries and aquatic investigations at all of the parks and lakeshores of Lakes Superior and Michigan, as well as at Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota and on the St. Croix National Scenic River in Wisconsin/Minnesota.

Spring-R-Roo Gymnastics (CORRECTION) -

The previous flier had a start date in February for the next session of gymnastics – unfortunately this was a typo.  Jeanie has updated the flier and pro-rated the price for starting this next Monday (Janauary 17th).  Please see the linked flier below for further details.

Keweenaw Natural and Attachment Parenting (KNAP)

Keweenaw Natural and Attachment Parenting (KNAP) is a resource for Keweenaw-area parents who are interested in practicing attachment parenting and embracing a natural lifestyle for their families.

Examples of attachment and natural parenting include: natural childbirth (incl. homebirth), breastfeeding, babywearing, sharing a family bed, elimination communication (diaper-free babies), cloth diapering, vaccine choice, alternative medicine, gentle discipline, homeschooling, healthy eating (unprocessed, local, organic), and green living (avoiding chemicals, living sustainably).

Starting in January, the KNAP group will host monthly potluck-style gatherings so that parents can socialize, share information, and support one another on their parenting journeys. Meetings will be held on the first Thursday of every month, 6-8 pm, at the First United Methodist Church in Hancock. Our first meeting will be on Thursday, January 6th. All families interested in any aspects of attachment and natural parenting are welcome!

You can also sign up for our Yahoo group at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KNAP/.

"Mathops" Provider Requesting Assistance

"Mathops" is a free Algebra/math program that has been featured in our "Updates!" a few times before. On January 3rd, CCHE received the following email and I felt it appropriate to pass it on:

"I am sorry for sending you an email, but we need your help.  We provide free algebra programming and have come across an opportunity to submit a proposal for a government grant to add enhancements to our algebra product, www.mathops.com.  We are working with a local university on this proposal.  These enhancements will help home school students.  The proposal is due the second week in January.

In order to receive funding, we need letters from current customers regarding their thoughts of our product.

If you know someone who is using our product, please pass this email on to them.

If we use their letter in any way, we will give them a one year subscription to our commercial free side.

Letters need to be one page or less, with at least one inch margins, in font 12 or larger (don't you just love the government!).  They should include a brief introduction of who is writing the letter and how they use Mathops, information on their opinion of Mathops, and possibly something about how it has helped their child.   If they'd like to add something about how they'd like to see the product expanded that would help too.

We would need the letter prior to January 9th.   The letter can be emailed as a scanned attachment or faxed to us at (withheld for archive) (please write attention Kathy Ferguson Twining Mathematics, LLC on the cover page).  It can also be mailed to the address below:

 (withheld for archive)

Thank you for considering this.  I apologize for sending you another email.

Bowers can be zany on stage while playing a song like "Four Wet Pigs" and follow this with the gentle reverence of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken."
