BROCKWAY MOUNTAIN RAPTORS
Brockway Mountain is a great place to see birds of prey in the spring. This year, a group of concerned citizens has formed a group called the Keweenaw Raptor Survey which is conducting a careful survey of raptors passing Brockway Mountain through June 15. Either take a road trip up there to see what kinds of birds are being spotted, or check out their website: keweenawraptorsurvey.org
HIKING THE KEWEENAW
Hike with a View in the Keweenaw!
Families and the public are invited to come on an interpretive and
challenging hike at the
Grinnell Memorial Nature Sanctuary (Bare Bluff)
2-5 pm, Saturday, June 12 ~ Lac La Belle
Visit this spectacular Michigan Nature Association sanctuary near Lac La
Belle with its stunning panoramic views of Lake Superior. Rising 588
feet above Lake Superior, Bare Bluff is one of the most prominent
landmarks on the south shore of the Keweenaw Peninsula.   This will be a
challenging hike over rugged terrain with rocky slopes and steep
ravines, as well as outstanding scenery, soaring raptors, and some of
the oldest rocks in the Keweenaw!
Meet at 2 PM at Lac La Belle Marina parking area to carpool to the
sanctuary trailhead, a 20-minute drive on rough roads. Come prepared
with sturdy shoes, a backpack, plenty of water and snacks. Rain gear,
sun hat, sunscreen, insect repellant, and an extra layer is strongly
encouraged. A camera and binoculars are also recommended.
Driving directions: To reach the Grinnell Nature Sanctuary, drive north
from Calumet on US 41. About 15 miles north of Calumet, just after the
Delaware mine on the left, turn right at the sign for Lac La Belle.
Drive five miles to Lac La Belle, turn left, and look for the marina
sign on the right. Hikers will rendez-vous at the Lac La Belle Marina
before continuing on to the trailhead. This is a loop trail, allow 2-3
hours roundtrip.

SOCCER CAMP

Dear Soccer Families:

The primary purpose of the Michigan Tech's soccer camp is to help make your child a better soccer
player. Our camp is designed to improve the skill level and tactical understanding of all
players. Training and game sessions will be intense and competitive to challenge every
level of the player's ability. During the small and full-sided games we encourage your
child to exhibit the skills they have learned during the training sessions.
The camp runs from June 21 to June 24, 2010. Please register by June 14, 2010.
Please click on the link below for additional information and registration specifics.
Thank you,--

Portage Library Hosts Wellness Series
The Portage Lake District Library will host a series of natural health and wellness programs on the second Thursday of each month beginning in June.

On June 10 at 6:30 p.m., professional massage therapist Angel (withheld for archive) will present "Acupressure Facelift!" Participants will learn a simple facial toning program that can be done at home to revitalize facial muscles and tone the whole face. They may bring a small mirror for this session.

This 15-20 minute self-treatment is very soothing and can soften facial lines, increase circulation to the face, and ease sinus pressure. Participants will also learn which acupressure points can reduce or eliminate headache pain, relieve insomnia, and stop muscle cramps throughout the body.

Other programs in this series that will be taught by Angel include Everyday Uses of Essential Oils on July 8, Strategies for Relaxation and Pain Relief on August 12, and Self-Reflexology to Boost Your Immune System on September 9. All classes begin at 6:30 p.m.

Angel is a licensed and nationally certified massage therapist with practices in Toivola and Hancock. She is also a certified instructor for LaStone Therapy and volunteers her time at Portage Hospital doing massage for people living with cancer.

These programs are free and everyone is welcome. For more information please call the library at 482-4570 or visit www.pldl.org.
