COPPER COUNTRY HOME EDUCATORS UPDATES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pine River Paddlesports Center
Greetings,
We are a home-schooling family that operates the Pine River Paddlesports Center and Quiet Campground. We are located in the middle of the Manistee National Forest, one half hour east of Cadillac.
We are thrilled each time we are able to host and meet a home-schooling family or group. We are so thankful for who you are! And to entice you to visit here, we have established Sunday thru Friday as "Home School Discount Days" at PRPC. Throughout our 2010 season, we'll be giving all homeschoolers a 20% discount on all PRPC goods and services, Sundays thru Fridays.
PRPC has become a hub for forest-friendly family activities. We have a no-fee Frisbee/Disc Golf Course on site, and have also established Rock and Tree Identification Challenge that are both fun and educational. Again, no fee.
We also rent mountain bikes, have a super-safe, auto-belay rock climbing wall, a t-shirt/souvenir store, and rent canoes, kayaks, and family rafts on Michigan's premiere paddling rivers, the Pine and Big Manistee.
We invite you to visit our main website at www.thepineriver.com for more information about us and our services. And a direct link to our "Camping" page shows more of the fun and educational activities that we have to offer at PRPC, www.thepineriver.com/campground.
Hoping to be of service!
Sincerely,
Mark, Val, & the PRPC SuperStaff
Ottawa Sportsmen's Club Junior Shooting Sports Camp
Get the word out to the neighborhood kids, your kids and grandkids, any interested kid 14-18 years of age ... Ottawa Sportsmen's Club is again holding Junior Shooting Sports Camp, Monday through Friday, June 14-18, 2010. The camp is limited to sixteen (16) young athletes ages 14-18. There will be a $25 charge to the participants. For more information contact Coach Ron (withheld for archive) or go to the Ottawa Sportsmen's Club website at: www.ottawasportsmen.org
Advance registration is required and reservations for the camp must be confirmed and paid for NO LATER THAN MONDAY, JUNE 7, 2010.
In an effort to give more young people and their parents a more positive experience in the shooting sports, the OSC is conducting their 10th annual Jr. Shooting Sports Camp, with instruction in competitive (Olympic) style rifle, pistol and shotgun shooting.
Patterned after similar NRA National Shooting Camps, the shooters will be very closely supervised with NO LESS than one experienced instruction for every two shooters. The time at the camp will be divided between classroom instruction and actual shooting ... lots of it. We go through over 8,000 founds of ammunition during the shooting portion of the camp.
Classroom instruction will be on: shooting as an athletic event; competitive shooting; developing skills; responsibility; self discipline; equipment; basic marksmanship; safety; safety; safety .. etc.. And, did I mention, safety!
Since the year 2000, the OSC has been hosting an annual week long Junior Shooting Sports Camp for girls and boys between 14 and 18 years of age. During the camp, the students are thoroughly and intensively instructed in firearms safety and the fundamentals in shooting techniques for target rifles, pistols, and shotguns. The week long shooting camp culminates in a competitive Olympic style shooting event between two teams of shooters.
The Junior Shooting Sports Camp is operated by a volunteer staff of members of the Ottawa Spsortsmen's Club. The OSC donates the use of the shooting range, grounds and facilities for the week long camp.
Portage Library Hosts Marx Brothers Celebration
The Portage Lake District Library will host a program for people who love to laugh.
On Saturday, May 22, at 12:30 p.m. Ariel Lake will host a program celebrating the comedy and nonsense of the Marx Brothers with a showing of the 1929 film The Cocoanuts. This musical comedy stars the four Marx Brothers in a zany plot to foil real estate schemes, jewel thieves, and star-crossed lovers in a Florida resort hotel. Hilarity leads to complete chaos as Chico misunderstands "viaduct" for "why a duck" and Groucho's attempts at auctioneering questionable real estate disintegrate into mayhem.
Ariel will open the show with "A Harpo," a short vaudeville act remembering the humor and antics of Harpo Marx. She has delighted many audiences with her act and has performed it in the Calumet Theatre. This program is suitable for children and adults. Popcorn will be served, and everyone with a sense of humor is invited.
Also, vaudeville performer Ariel Lake has expressed interest in having a partner for her Harpo Marx performance. I saw some great talent at your Little Gem Theater production. If anyone is interested, please get in touch with me.
Library presentations are free and everyone is welcome. For more information, please call the library at 482-4570 or visit www.pldl.org.
