Portage Library Hosts Engineering, Storytelling, and Creative Writing Programs
The Portage Lake District Library offers science and creative expression in upcoming programs.

Elementary and middle school children will discover how things work during the "Family Engineering Afternoon" on Friday, April 23, from 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Students from Michigan Technological University will lead kids and parents in doing exciting and fun hands-on engineering activities. This event is a continuation of engineering programs that offer new activities that develop a curiosity about and ability to solve engineering challenges.

This program is conducted by the Western U.P. Center for Science, Math, and Environmental Education and Michigan Tech with funding from The National Science Foundation.

The Copper Country Reading Council invites everyone who loves a good story to come to a "Storytelling Workshop" on Saturday, April 24, from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The event begins with a short Love That Dog Readers Theater performance by members of the 2010 professional development team followed by the workshop presentation by Michigan author and storyteller John Mooy.

Mooy asks, "Why is it that in a world that seems to move at a speed we cannot keep up with, everyone enjoys a well told story? We speak in story, we listen in story, and we make sense of the world through our own collection of stories…so let's get started."

The author of several books, Mooy's stories reach deep into American lives describing scenes from a 1950's rural postal delivery route, telling stories about those whose names appear on the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C., and writing for professional baseball and football players. He helped federal prosecutors construct an understandable story in the Oklahoma City bombing trial and has done commentary for National Public Radio.

Rekha Ambardar, Assistant Professor at the International School of Business at Finlandia University, will present a "Creative Writing Workshop" on Thursday, April 29, from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. This workshop is geared towards upper middle school and high school students and adults.

She will discuss the use of believable characters and emotion in fiction. Participants will have an opportunity to develop those skills and discuss their writing. Participants may also bring samples of their writing for individual or a group critique.

Ambardar is the author of two contemporary romance novels and over 80 short stories and articles in print and electronic magazines. Her stories have been published in anthologies and include murder mysteries. Her website is www.rekha.mmebj.com.

Library presentations are free and everyone is welcome. For more information, please call the library at 482-4570 or visit www.pldl.org

Due to teacher illness, the new session of Music for Tots will be postponed one week--so sorry!

Music for Tots is an introductory music class for two- to four-year-olds.  Activities will include rhythm instruments, movement, listening, singing, pre-reading, and the occasional craft project.  A parent, caregiver or older sibling must accompany the child.

Cost for the five-week series will be $30 ($6/class), and I barter!  We will meet at the Calumet Art Center on Tuesdays from 2:40 - 3:25, beginning April 27.  Pre-registration is required, and I have room for three more students.  Please contact Kathleen (withheld for archive).
