LIBRARY PROGRAMS
The Portage Lake District Library is the site of the Silent Auction to support The Tree House Indoor Playground that is being built by the Keweenaw Family Resource Center.
On Saturday, November 28, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., bids will be taken throughout the day on almost 90 baskets of high quality items for men, women, and children. Items being auctioned include restaurant gift certificates, jewelry, sunglasses, a skateboard, a remote car starter, an American Girl doll, toys, food, books, and more. To see photos of items that will be auctioned, go to http://houghtonwinterpark.blogspot.com.

The Tree House Indoor Playground is taking shape in the Red Ridge Plaza on Sharon Avenue in Houghton. Although construction is moving along, more funds need to be raised to pay for some of the play fixtures. For more information or to view or bid on items by appointment, call Cathy (withheld for archive).

On Saturday, December 5, the Portage Lake District Library will host a Holiday Storytime at 2:00 p.m. as part of the Downtown Houghton Holiday schedule of events. All children are invited to come and listen to winter tales and take home a holiday treat.

Presentations at the library are free and everyone is welcome. (withheld for archive)

NEW DRAMA CLUB SCHEDULE
Thank you very much, everyone, for your input regarding drama club meetings; it has been very helpful.  Most of the input I've received has indicated that parents would prefer to wait until January (like we did last year), to allow the flu problems to hopefully abate, and also because many families will be traveling, hunting, and involved with various holiday activities this fall.
So!  While I will miss seeing you all before then, I will look forward to getting started in January.  Let's plan on Friday, January 21st at the Portage Library for the younger kids, and Tuesday the 25th at the Calumet Art Center for the older kids.  (Re: the Calumet Art Center: a couple of people have kindly indicated that they would be willing to pay a bit more per meeting in order to help make ends meet for those who find the cost prohibitive; once we start meeting, we can make adjustments to location or whatever else as necessary.)
Meanwhile, please send any drama club ideas you may have regarding what your children might like to try--Judy C's suggestion that we use the "Picturing America" posters (Judy has them all, and they are beautiful) as inspiration is intriguing.  There is a website, PicturingAmerica.neh.gov, where the poster images may be perused.  Looking at Grant Wood's "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere", or Whistlers "The Peacock Room" and Edward Hopper's "House by the Railroad", etc. etc., could generate some wonderful skits, monologues, plays, puppet shows, etc.--my personal favorite is Dorothea Lange's "Migrant Mother", which brings to mind stories about the dust bowl, etc.  Also, Latha P. has some very good ideas about incorporating dance and music into our meetings.  I'd love to hear any other suggestions you might have.
Here's hoping that we all have a healthy autumn!

PORTAGE LAKE LIBRARY PROGRAMS

The Portage Lake District Library continues to offer a diverse range of programs and events.
On Thursday, November 12, FOLK, Friends of the Land of Keweenaw, will hold its annual General Membership Meeting in the community room. It will begin at 6:00 p.m. with "Expectations of Thresholds," a short film and presentation by George Desort. Desort is an independent filmmaker who recently released his film Fortunate Wilderness about the wolf and moose study of Isle Royale. The General Membership Meeting will begin at 7:00p.m., and refreshments will be served. All are welcome to attend.
Youth in grades K-6 are invited to a day of fun, discovery, and cultural diversity as the Michigan State University Extension 4-H Youth Development and the Portage Lake District Library team up to bring the Michigan 4-H China Art Project. On Saturday, November 14, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., students will view artwork made by children in China as well as make their own art that could possibly be sent to China as part of this cultural exchange program. Participants will also learn how to play Chinese games and listen to stories from China. A small lunch will be provided, and students may also bring their own food and beverages. (withheld for archive)
Elvis Presley enthusiasts will enjoy an evening of music and performance by Dan Becia and his band on Monday, November 16, at 7:00 p.m. Becia and his band have performed at the Houghton County Fair, and they invite everyone to join them for an evening of classic Elvis.
On Wednesday, November 18, at 7:00 p.m. members of the group "Vegan Vitality" will present a forum for discussion about the interconnectedness of our eating practices as it relates to our health-care crisis, our economic crisis, our global warming crisis, as well as to our ethics. Their objective is to narrow the gap in understanding between all perspectives on these subjects and to offer a direct way to resolve these problems by being inclusive and respectful advocates for healthy ethical eating. Gretchen Janssen will discuss the environmental impact of the meat industry, Anne Haywood will highlight ethical concerns in the meat industry, and JoAnne Thomas will present the nutritional aspects of a vegan diet. All folks of all diets are welcome to participate in this educational discussion with freedom from pressure or adverse attitudes about their food choices.
To celebrate the anniversary of the birthday of Harpo Marx, Ariel Lake will host A Night at the Opera on Saturday, November 21, at 1:30 p.m. In this classic 1935 film, the Marx Brothers take on high society when two lovers who are both in operas are prevented from being together when the man is not accepted as an operatic tenor. With typical sustained zaniness, the Marx Brothers turn the opera into utter chaos by substituting the music to "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" and selling peanuts in the aisle. Birthday cake and ice cream will be served and everyone with a sense of humor is invited.
On Monday, November 23, at 7:00 p.m., Joseph (withheld for archive) will host the film Consuming Kids: The Commercialization of Childhood. This brand new and critically acclaimed film throws light on the practices of a relentless multi-billion dollar marketing machine that sells kids everything from junk food to violent video games. He said, "Consuming Kids will change the way you think about childhood in the 21st century." This program is presented by The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood.
Library programs are free and open to all. For more information, please call the library at 482-4570 or visit www.pldl.org.
