Portage Library Offers Program on "Animal Diversity"

Librarian Chris would like to invite all homeschooling families to this fantastic presentation! Please come if you can.

Have you ever seen something strange on the shore of Lake Superior or been followed as you hopped from rock to rock? Have you heard the bellow of a bull Brule Moose Slug or ran with a Loopelope?

If these curious creatures are new to you, come to the Portage Lake District Library on Thursday, September 18, at 7:00 p.m. for "Unkle Ake's Introduction to Animal Diversity."

Ake Larson , artist, photographer, and author of Unkle Ake's Field Guide to inFrequently Found Animals on the Shore of Lake Superior will teach you where to go and what to look for so you can discover your own curious creatures. Come prepared to hear funny poems, help Unkle Ake discover a creature, and practice the skills you will need to find your own.

This program is for elementary school students and adults with a healthy imagination, an interest in art and poetry, and a love for Lake Superior.

Ake Larson's Field Guide features 20 unusual creatures that he discovered all around Lake Superior. Every creature contains 100% natural materials like driftwood, birch bark, and stones. In the Field Guide, each creature is introduced with a poem and described more fully with a series of field notes that highlight its habits and habitat.

Ake Larson is usually out tracking an enormous Arctic Icicle Toad or trying to snap a picture of a speedy Spike-back Beach Rat. He also likes to tend his vegetable garden, plant fruit trees, and play in the snow on his small farm in Mass City.

Visit his website www.borealtroll.com to see a sample of his book, a slide show on how the book was made, and bonus photos. There will be a book signing of Unkle Ake's Field Guide after the presentation.

Everyone is invited to attend library events and presentations are free. For more information please call (withheld for archive).
