Toy Library – Jan 5^th

The Toy Library at the BHK Ryan Center on Michigan St in Hancock will re-open on Thursday Jan 5. Hours are Mondays and Thursdays 1-6pm and they hold an Open House the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 530-730pm. The Toy Library is open to the community and has lots of books for all ages, even up through adult; and has many toys, puzzles, games, and other kid-related equipment that you can also borrow.

Winter Ski – Jan 8^th

Join Michigan Nature Association Steward Joan Chadde at a Winter Ski to the Estivant Pines at 1 pm on Sunday, January 8. Meet in Copper Harbor on Lake Manganese Road at the end of the plowed area, just past the Lake Fanny Hooe Campground. Park at the end of the plowed road. Bring along snacks and water and enjoy a corss-country ski into the winter wonderland of the majestic Estivant Pines. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing for a long ski adventure.

Online at the Library – Jan. 13^th

The Portage Lake District Library and the Computer Science and Humanities Departments at Michigan Technological University are providing free tutoring at the library for beginning computer users.

"Online at the Library" will begin on Friday, January 13, and will continue to be held on the second and fourth Fridays of each month. All sessions will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

These help sessions with individual tutors will show participants how to use the internet to keep in touch with people, share pictures and letters, find information, and much more. Participants are welcome to bring their laptop computers if they choose, or they may use the library's computers. People may attend as many of the sessions as they wish.

Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange – Jan. 16^th

Regular meetings of the Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange are held on the 3^rd Monday of each month, September through May, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Portage Lake District Library. The next meeting will be on January 16, and everyone is invited to participate.

Each month features a different type of food, and January's meeting will focus on gluten-free bread. Participants are welcome to bring a loaf of their favorite gluten-free bread for sampling and are encouraged to share their recipes. Copies of the recipes will be made at the library. Please list all ingredients used in making foods that are shared at these meetings and identify the brand names of the gluten-free ingredients. Bringing food is not a requirement for attendance.

The Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange is organized by and for those who are interested in or required to follow a gluten-free diet. Gluten-free eating requires the avoidance of all wheat, rye, barley, and oats. Most people find it challenging at first, but are excited to find recipes and foods that are fun and easy to make and tasty to eat. The Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange is an opportunity to share those great recipes and learn from others. Everyone who is interested in learning more about gluten-free eating is encouraged to attend.

CCHE Public Homeschooling Library – This library is free to anyone interested in home education materials and that live in the local area. It's located in the back office of Bay Insurance Inc. on Sharon Ave. in Houghton. Visit http://www.cchomeeducators.com/Library_Info.htm for further details.

Open Gym - Finlandia gym - 1pm to 3pm, Thursdays. $2/person or $6/family. Some balls available but you are welcome to bring appropriate for indoor gym equipment/toys. Please abide by the following rules: Parents (or adult) MUST supervise children. No kids in the bleachers or the balcony area and no playing the hallways. Please wear no-mark, indoor tennis shoes. No boots or bare feet. Stocking feet are ok. No rollerblades, skateboards, or scooters. Avoid equipment labeled for Finlandia students only. Be courteous to one another and to walkers. Children should be respectful of all adults.
Please begin to prepare to leave around 2:50 p.m. for the Finlandia athletic teams to begin practice. Note that open gym will be cancelled if Finlandia is closed due to the weather or holidays (i.e. Thanksgiving).

Language Classes – Baird Campbell is coming from Madrid to stay in the Copper Country from Dec – Aug. He will be teaching one class at Finlandia and would love to teach/tutor anyone who would like to learn a foreign language. He is extremely fluent in Spanish and French – also knows quite a bit of Italian, Portuguese, and Latin. He can teach beginners and tutor those more advanced with conversational language. He has helped at CCCAC with Art Workshops for kids in the past and is well known to several homeschooling families. Young Adult Bookclub - second and fourth Mondays of each month at 6:30 p.m at the Portage Lake District Library in Houghton. This group is for teens who love to read.

Curriculum Sale – June 11^th

June 11^th is the annual Curriculum & Book Sale – sponsored by CCHE – at the Evangel Baptist Church on College Ave in Houghton. The sale will be from 11:00am to 2:00pm with set-up at 10:00am. Please LOOK FOR SIGNS since there may be another event using a different entrance and there may be parking set aside for our use.

Books should be marked with a 3x5 index card in the front cover containing the name of the book, your name, the asking price and the number that corresponds to the list of curriculum. These cards will be used to track payments. In addition, you need to provide a numbered list of the books/curriculum you bring and the cost you want for each with your name, phone number and address on the top of it. This way the cards and lists can be correlated. The books can be dropped off the morning of the sale and any unsold books will need to be picked up at the end of the day. Any books not picked up will be considered a donation and either added to CCHE's loaning library or donated to Goodwill.

This year CCHE will be doing something slightly different – charging a 10% fee on all books sold. This means if you sell $40 worth of items, CCHE will keep $4 of it. (You are only charged for what sells.) The money will go to the development of homeschool services including: a loaning library, developing online resources for new-to-homeschooling families, the placement of a homeschooling magazine at Portage Library, a monthly parents-night-out, and other services.

Spring Art & Music Fest – June 11^th

Live music and art exhibits, run from noon to 7 p.m. June 11 - located on the upper parking deck off Shelden Avenue behind the Keweenaw Brewing Company and Swift's True Value.

Bands begin playing at 12:30 p.m., when Huffing Pink will take the stage. Gratiot Lake comes on at 1:45 p.m., followed by Jellikit at 3 p.m., Uncle Pete's All-Star BBQ Blues Band at 4:15 and the Pasi Cats closing the day at 5:45 p.m. There will also be an art fair with 32 artist booths, with selections spanning pottery, painting, jewelry and clothing. There will also be an art activity area featuring Stephanie Trevino's art bus, which she did as a senior project.

WWII Soldiers to a Laurium Barkeep

During World War II A.B. Quello, proprietor of the Board of Trade Tavern in Laurium, corresponded with over 150 local soldiers and sailors serving in the US Armed Forces. In addition to letters and post cards, men sent him jokes, banners and pennants from their training camps, photo-portraits, and various other memorabilia. We are priveleged to share this collection with you in our newest exhibit "REMEMBER ME - Photos & Letters from WWII Soldiers to a Laurium Barkeep".

Summer Reading Program – June 11^th

Opening day activities and registration for the Portage Lake District Library Summer Reading Program begins Saturday, June 11, from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Kids are invited to make crafts and everyone can create their own ice cream sundae in the community room. Early registrants will be treated with a balloon hat or animal made especially for them by John Gershenson.

The "Reading Takes You Around the World!" Summer Reading Program will continue through Saturday, August 13, and people may register throughout the summer. Participants will receive a reading log, book bag, and bookmark when they register and prizes as they progress through their reading lists. The Summer Reading Program is open to all ages, children through adults, and reading logs may include books, magazines, audio books, reading to young children, or being read to.

The Summer Reading Program series of events includes Storytimes with Maria Sliva every Wednesday from 11:00 – noon. The Houghton High School Key Club will also present Storytimes and a craft on days to be announced. Look for listings of programs and events in the library, the media, on Facebook, and at www.pldl.org.

Everyone is invited to join the fun and let their imaginations take them around the world!

Lake Trout Festival – June 11^th

The 6^th Annual Baraga County Lake Trout Festival will take place on Saturday June 11^th, 2011 which coincides with Michigan's free fishing weekend – no fishing license necessary.

Baraga County has been named the Lake Trout Capital and the free (no admission charge) Festival will combine the Keweenaw Classic Fishing Tournament with family-oriented events such as beach volleyball, pancake breakfast, "ducky river race" and an arts and crafts fair. Entertainment for the entire family will include a kids' carnival, junk art contest and a street dance. Repeating this year is the "Pequaming Run/Walk", "1/2 Marathon", a Family 5K and pie eating contest. Food booths and kids' fishing pond will ensure fun for all, regardless of age.

All events will take place in the Waterfront Park and Marina in downtown L'Anse, Michigan.

PLDL Webinars – June 15^th

The Portage Lake District Library will offer webinars for the public that will explain how to use its two remarkable databases: Mango and Universal Class.

Shawn Leche, the library Director, will present the webinars on Wednesday, June 15, and Wednesday, July 13, from 4:00 – 4:45 p.m.

Mango is an online language learning system that teaches practical conversation skills for real communication. Each lesson combines real life situations and audio from native speakers with simple, clear instructions. The courses are presented with an appreciation for cultural nuance and real-world application that integrates components of vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and culture. It includes over 30 languages and 10 courses which teach English as a second language. Patrons can choose a level of instruction from basic to complete courses that are more in-depth. The database features a fluency button to click on to hear a word pronounced at normal speaking speed.

Universal Class offers over 500 online continuing education courses taught by real instructors with remote, 24/7 access so people can study at their convenience on their own schedule. Patrons can enroll in up to five courses at a time and have six months to finish each course. A complete list of classes is posted on the library's website.

Mango and Universal Class are available free of charge to all Portage Lake District Library patrons.

The Job Force Board, Bay College, Bay West and M-TEC to address the future need for skilled employees and the current need to engage area youth interested in manufacturing and technological careers.

CCHE Library – July 1^st

The tentative opening date for CCHE's Public Homeschooling Library is July 1^st. The library is located in the back office of Bay Insurance at 501 Sharon Ave. in Houghton (on the top of the hill, next to the fire hall on the corner to turn down to Houghton High School). There is a separate entrance to the library itself but visitors are welcome to use the main entrance as well.

The library will be open during business hours – Mon – Fri 8:30am – 4:30pm. Plus the library will be open one Saturday a month (to be announced). Right now we have a little over 100 textbooks and other homeschooling resources. Materials need to be signed out with your name, contact info and the estimated date of return. Check-out periods are: leisure books (2 – 4 weeks), reference materials (2 weeks), homeschooling/parenting (2 months) and curriculum (up to 6 months). All materials must be returned, re-checked out or reported as lost/damaged within 6 months of borrowing. Once a year, in June, the library will be closed for cataloging/organizing and all materials will need to be returned for that period of time.

The library will be run on an honor system. There are no over-due fees or fees for lost/damaged books. Instead there will be a donation can for those that want to help fund the library or for those that may have accidentally lost/damaged an item and feel they can afford to pay replacement costs.

Other rules/guidelines –

Do not write in any textbook or workbook. Please have your students write in a separate notebook – even if the book says to write in it.
You can only check out up to 10 items in any one day. You may have an unlimited number of materials out at one time but to make maintaining the database easier – we ask that you limit your daily check-outs.
There will be an online database on CCHE's website listing all books and stating if they are check out and when they are due back in.
Please keep your voices down as the library is in the same building as an operating business.
Do not allow your children to climb on the exercise equipment, just outside of the library shelving area.
You do not have to be a member of any particular homeschooling organization or even be actively homeschooling to borrow materials. As long as the materials are being used to further someone's education – you are welcome here.
CCHE does not endorse or sensor (excepting that they must have some relevant educational value and meet basic decency standards) the materials in the library. All of the materials are donated by members of the homeschooling community and may include religious references or varying opinions. We encourage homeschooling families to evaluate all resources to ensure they meet their family's needs.

We are still looking for further donations of curriculum, reading materials, and other homeschooling resources. We are in particular need of homeschooling "how-tos" and introductory materials.

There are two options for donating books/curriculum to the library. You can donate the books ("giving" them to CCHE) or just lend them. If you chose to lend the books/curriculum you will be required to sign a liability waiver stating that you realize the books are being loaned out and that CCHE is not responsible for any lost, damage or theft. By lending the books to CCHE's library you retain the rights to the book and can withdraw them for your own purposes at any time (once the book is returned – we will not interrupt a check-out period). This allows people to store the books somewhere other than their home, help other area homeschoolers and still retain some of the investment they've made into curriculum for their children.

Carnegie Museum Exhibit – June 7^th

"People, Place and Time: Michigan's Copper Country Through the Lens of J.W. Nara"

A traveling exhibit created by Michigan Tech Archives is now on display at the Carnegie Museum, Downtown Houghton.

Please join us Tuesday, June 7, 6:30 pm, for an illustrated presentation by Erik Nordberg, University Archivist at Michigan Tech Archives, entitled "Michigan's Copper Country Through the Lens of J.W. Nara" which features dozens of historical photographs of the Keweenaw.

Created by Michigan Tech Archives, this traveling exhibit explores the life and times of Calumet photographer J.W. Nara. John William Nara was born in Finland in 1874. He later immigrated to the United States and established a photographic studio in Calumet, Michigan, in the heart of America's most productive copper mining region. In addition to posed studio portraits, J.W. Nara's lens also captured the people, place, and time he experienced in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula. Copper mining and industry are an important part of the story, but Nara also captured the Keweenaw's rural landscape, including local farms, shorelines, lighthouses, and pastoral back roads.

The traveling exhibit, funded in part by descendants Robert and Ruth Nara of Bootjack Michigan, works from historical photographs held at the Michigan Tech Archives. Interpretive panels highlight the people, places, and times that J.W. Nara experienced during his lifetime and include material on urban life, farming, and the 1913 Michigan copper miners' strike. A small exhibit catalog is available at no charge and includes three Nara photograph postcards from the collection.

What to bring: Lawn chairs, blankets, food and drinks for your family, supplies for fun in the sun. This is a nice area for canoes and kayaks. The board walk provides an excellent nature walk.

Come on out and get some exercise or just relax while the kids play together. Parents are responsible for their own children.

Natural Health – June 9^th

The Portage Lake District Library will host its monthly program in the Natural Health and Wellness Series on Thursday, June 9, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Local meditation practitioner Dorothy Riutta will present "What Meditation Really Is." She will explain that anyone can use meditation to undo difficult emotional patterns, to access the mind's fundamental nature which is calm and clear, and to develop positive qualities like wisdom and compassion.

Riutta says "In the modern world, we are surrounded by material wealth and comfort, yet this bright exterior often masks feelings of dissatisfaction, anxiety, and depression. Through meditation we learn that true happiness is found within."

"The feelings of contentment and wholeness that we often seek outside ourselves are actually part of our basic nature," Riutta adds. "Unfortunately, we have become so habituated to looking outwardly for happiness that we often do not know how to discover this inner wealth." Riutta will demonstrate how meditation can "settle the mind" and reveal our inherent natural peace.

She will also review the latest scientific research on meditation and health, and will teach participants how to use everyday sensory experiences to calm the mind, body, and heart. Riutta owns Peaceful Niche, a meditation studio located in Hancock. She has taught meditation classes there for 5 years. She has been practicing meditation for many years and has studied with a variety of teachers. For the past 15 years her primary teacher has been Sogyal Rinpoche, author of The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. Her study and practice is within the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.

Curriculum Sale – June 11^th

Books should be marked with an 3x5 index card in the front cover containing the name of the book, your name, the asking price and the number that corresponds to the list of curriculum. These cards will be used to track payments. In addition, you need to provide a numbered list of the books/curriculum you bring and the cost you want for each with your name, phone number and address on the top of it. This way the cards and lists can be correlated. The books can be dropped off the morning of the sale and any unsold books will need to be picked up at the end of the day. Any books not picked up will be considered a donation and either added to CCHE's loaning library or donated to Goodwill.

CCHE Library

CCHE is currently putting together a loan library. We are looking for donations of shelves and books.

There are now two options for donating books/curriculum to the library. You can donate the books ("giving" them to CCHE) or just lend them. If you chose to lend the books/curriculum you will be required to sign a liability waiver stating that you realize the books are being loaned out and that CCHE is not responsible for any lost, damage or theft. By lending the books to CCHE's library you retain the rights to the book and can withdraw them for your own purposes at any time (once the book is returned – we will not interrupt a check-out period). This allows people to store the books somewhere other than their home, help other area homeschoolers and still retain some of the investment they've made into curriculum for their children.

Park Day – June 2^nd

Our first park day event has a shelter and big fireplace. Once in the park, turn left and take the little curvy park road to the end where the beach bathrooms and pavilions are located.

We will not know where we will set up until we get there that day. We will meet at the BEACH down the big cement path if it is good weather or at one of the pavilions by the BEACH across from the bathrooms if it is cold or drizzly weather. It will depend on what is available.

What to bring: Lawn chairs, blankets, food for your family, we will likely have a fire, so campfire food and a way to cook it would be great, whatever your family is willing to carry for beach fun. There is a bike trail near these pavilions and beach bathroom, some kids bring bikes if it is cooler.

Come on out and get some exercise or just relax while the kids play together. Parents are responsible for their own children.

McClain is a state park and as such there is a fee; however, if you paid the extra $10 when you registered your car, you have a special sticker on your license plate that lets you into any state park free. (Note: If you forgot whether you did or not look at the sticker on your license plate and see if there's a capital P above the month OR on your registration it will say "recreational passport" at the top.)

Creative Writing Workshop – June 2^nd

The Portage Lake District Library will host a creative writing workshop with local author Rekha Ambardar on Thursday, June 2, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

In her workshop, "Beginnings, Endings, and the Stuff in Between," Ambardar will discuss strong beginnings and endings in fiction writing with a focus on ways to retain tension in the middle of a story.

This workshop is geared towards adults and young adults, and both experienced and beginning writers are welcome. Writing materials and handouts will be provided.

Ambardar is the author of two contemporary novels, His Harbor Girl and Maid to Order, and over ninety short stories, articles, and essays in print and electronic magazines. She is an assistant professor of business at Finlandia's International School of Business.

Youth Shooting Camp – June 6^th

Youth Shooting Sports Camp, hosted by Ottawa Sortsmen's Club, will be held June 13-17. Deadline for registration is June 6. The camp is for ages 14-18 and costs $25, though some scholarships might be available. The club is located 6 miles west of Baraga on Hwy M-38 by the Pelkie Road intersection. Keweenaw Bike Club – Tonight!

Sorry for the late notice on this one –

The ride tonight is at the Tech ski trails. We meet at the trail-head at 6:30. The rides are on Wednesday nights at 6:30 to 8:30. We usually know where the next week's rides are on Wed. night. You can also call Cross country sports for the info.

The rides usually split up into a slow group and a fast group. An adult needs to accompany younger riders. The rides last year were between 6 and 14 miles and the terrain is moderate to technical. We have a lot of fun and get a descent workout.

Riders must have a helmet.

4^th Thur. In History – May 26^th

Dairy farms were once a familiar sight in the Copper Country, but today
there are very few. Join Dean Juntunen as he explores their history in
Ontonagon County, sharing photos of the farms and stories of the farmers
including photos of today's barns.

This program will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday, May 26th, in the Exhibit
Building at the Houghton County Fairgrounds, located at 1500 Birch Street,
in Hancock, Michigan. It is part of the Fourth Thursday in History program
sponsored by Keweenaw National Historical Park.

The Fourth Thursday in History series arranges public presentations on
important aspects of Copper Country and regional history, including
techniques for historic preservation. Presentations are scheduled in venues
throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula, particularly at historic sites
associated with specific topics. They are free and open to the public.

PLDL Stamp Collecting – May 26^th

United States Postmaster Mel DeGroot will present "Philately: the Study and Art of Stamp Collecting" on Thursday, May 26, from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Portage Lake District Library in Houghton.

Participants will learn how to start collecting stamps, understand the differences among various kinds of stamps, know how to safely remove stamps from envelopes, find out ways to preserve a stamp collection, and learn how to judge the condition of a stamp and tell what it is worth. There will be a display of stamps, the different kinds of books that they can be stored in, and other materials needed for successful stamp collecting. Handouts will also be available.

DeGroot is the Postmaster in Iron River, Michigan, and he invites everyone to find out how easy it is to start your own stamp collection without a big investment. His program is geared towards beginner and experienced stamp collectors as well as those who are curious about this fascinating hobby.

Summer Classes – Starts May 31^st

Little Gem Theater Director/MTU PhD candidate Eric Ericson will be offering a variety of classes this summer at the Little Gem in Lake Linden. Classes offered include Art I, Music (Violin, Voice, or Drum), Dramatic Arts (I & II), Geology of the Great Lakes, Northern Astronomy, Shakespeare for the Disinterested, Luke and Acts, and Movie Club. Day and evening classes are available, and are geared toward a variety of ages. Independent studies are also offered. Primitive Fire Starting – May 31^st

David Talaga, founder of the Houghton Primitive Skills and Wilderness Survival School, will teach children and adults fire making skills that include primitive, pre-modern, and modern methods on Tuesday, May 31, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Portage Lake District Library in Houghton.

Talaga will discuss primitive fire starting techniques using a hand drill, bow drill, fire plow, and pump drill and demonstrate how to make these tools. Participants will also learn about pre-modern fire starting methods that include learning how to make sparks from striking specific types of stones together, how to use flint, sunlight, and a fire piston. Modern fire starting methods will also be presented as well as ways to keep an outdoor fire going in all kinds of weather. Handouts will be available.

Weather permitting, a demonstration using some of these techniques will be held outside.

Talaga has been learning and teaching wilderness survival and primitive skills for over nine years and is the founder of the Houghton Primitive Skills and Wilderness Survival School.

The library is coming along nicely. In the next couple weeks, I will be able to provide an online list of our books and information on how to borrow (and loan) books.

Homeschoolers had a blast at the end-of-year get-together at the (withheld for archive)! As I sat chatting with the other mothers, it occurred to me how precious the extended homeschooling community has come to be to me. Homeschooling can be very intimidating! It is important that we take these opportunities to discuss fears and share stories of courage and inspiration. I encourage you to take every opportunity you can to be with other homeschooling parents. I know for me it was intimidating at first but talking with others I realized they shared the same worries and concerns as me. Some even had advice on things that I am going through since they have already been where I am right now. So to all you wonderful parents out there – thank you so much for your encouragement and community. For those looking for answers and support – come out and participate! Classes offered include Art I, Music (Violin, Voice, or Drum), Dramatic Arts (I & II), Geology of the Great Lakes, Northern Astronomy, Shakespeare for the Disinterested, Luke and Acts, and Movie Club. Day and evening classes are available, and are geared toward a variety of ages. Independent studies are also offered. Primitive Fire Starting – May 31^st

Talaga has been learning and teaching wilderness survival and primitive skills for over nine years and is the founder of the Houghton Primitive Skills and Wilderness Survival School.

Group Graduations

My son is currently a freshman in High School. He has expressed interest in having a graduation ceremony upon his graduation from school. This got me thinking and I approached CCHE about holding a graduation ceremony at somewhere like the Little Gem. Keep in mind that the parents will still need to be the ones giving out the diplomas but students would be able to invite friends and family, present a speech, etc.

If this is something you may be interested in for your child, please email me with the estimated year for graduation and any ideas you may have about what you would like to see. Obviously, this won't work well if there's only 1 or 2 students but if we could get between 3 and 5 students each year – it would make for a wonderful celebration not only of the individual student's academic achievement but also of homeschooling in general. CCHE Curriculum Sale – June 11^th

June 11^th is the annual CCHE Curriculum & Book Sale. This is a great opportunity to clean out your book shelves and recuperate a little of your investment in your child's education! It also helps families obtain gently used books & curriculum at great prices. More details to come!

Items to Remember

Open Swim at Finlandia's Pool, 1-2pm on Thusdays ($2 per a person; $6 for a family, with possible gym time afterwards until 2:30). Parents can swim too or enjoy some time chatting with other adults. This is an excellent way to get to know other homeschoolers while giving the kids some exercise and group activities! Remember that in order to participate in the Open Gym the child must wear clean gym shoes or socks. Per Finlandia's rules – bare feet are not permitted. LAST OPEN SWIM OF THE SCHOOL YEAR – MAY 26^th!

I am changing the archive policy so only private contact information is edited out. Mary Wright, Artistic Director for The Story Line Project, will be at the Portage Lake District Library during the afternoon of Friday, May 13, from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. to talk with you about this amazing community art project that pays tribute to your ancestors in a lasting and memorable way.

I am re-sending information to you about The Story Line Project in these attachments as a reminder of the details for this opportunity to participate in a major cultural event and artistic project.

I am also including details about Mary's presentation that is especially for you on Friday in the attachment titled The Story Line Project.doc.

Mary especially wants homeschooling families to participate in this project and extends a personal invitiation to each of you. You have told me in the past that Friday afternoons are the best time for you to attend a library event. We are hoping that this is still the case and that we will see many of you on Friday.

Those of you who want to participate will have free, easy access to the equipment needed to make these flags. All fabric, transfer paper, and use of the hot press will be provided free. We can set this all up in the community room of the library where you can come to work on your project.

This is a perfect opportunity for your children to learn about genealogy, do research on something that is significant and meaningful, study history from a personal point of view, learn a new form of art, see their work displayed in the community, on television, and in a documentary film, have their work archived at the Keweenaw National Historical Park for preservation, attend a professional opera performance for free, and whew... what could be more enriching?

Natural Health and Wellness Series Continues at Portage Library- May 12

The Portage Lake District Library will host its monthly program in the Natural Health and Wellness Series on Thursday, May 12, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Chiropractors David Campain and Andrea Dibley will present "10 Ways to Reach 100 and Love It!" Topics they will cover include the importance of doing regular exercise, eating fresh foods, stretching, doing deep breathing exercises, doing things you love and loving things you do. Also on their top ten list for longevity is taking time for yourself every day, learning how to keep your spine in line, making social connections, drinking pure water, getting quality sleep, and knowing how to boost your immune system the healthy way.

Dr. Campain and Dr. Dibley graduated from the Palmer College of Chiropractic and studied on a clinic abroad trip to India. After completing an internship in Wisconsin, they moved to the Keweenaw where they opened The Atlas Alternative Health Center in Houghton. In their practice they use low-force techniques that enable the nervous system to function and work properly.

Music Theatre Summer Camp – July 11th
CALLING ALL KIDS MUSIC THEATRE CAMP: On July 11 – 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Sts. Peter & Paul Lutheran Church will be sponsoring the Calling All Kids Music Theatre Camp. This music camp is for any interested child who has completed second – seventh grade. Throughout the week campers will be preparing the Christian musical, "American Ideal", a children's musical about humility, for a final performance in a church service on Sunday morning July 17th. Campers do not need any prior musical experience, just an interest and enthusiasm for music and performing. The cost for Calling All Kids Music Theatre Camp is $30. Each camper will receive a CD and script when they return their completed application form to Sts. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church. For more information and an application please stop by the church office at 1010 Madeleine St., Houghton or phone 482-4750.

The camp is directed by Shawn Weber McMahon, a music educator from Madison, WI. Ms. McMahon has been teaching music for 17 years and has been directing musicals for almost as long. She directs musical at her home church in Madison, WI every spring and is in demand as an artist in residence for her work with movement and music. Ms. McMahon is a native of Marquette, MI where she has also directed a week of Calling All Kids Music Theatre Camp

Arsenic and Old Lace – May 5^th

The Calumet Players present Arsenic and Old Lace at the Calumet Theatre at 340 Sixth Street Thursday, May 5 through Saturday, May 7 at 7:30 pm.

Mortimer Brewster, a newspaperman and author known for his diatribes against marriage, must deal with his crazy family as he debates whether to go through with his recent promise to marry the woman he loves. While trying to break the news to his two maiden aunts, he finds out his aunts' hobby: murdering lonely old men by poisoning them with homemade wine laced with arsenic and burying them in the cellar.

Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District 2011 Annual tree sale PICK-UP May 6th & 7th

Distribution: Orders may be picked up at the Houghton County Arena, 1500 Birch St., Hancock. Distribution dates and times are:

Friday, May 6	— 3:00–7:00 p.m.
Saturday, May 7	— 10:00 a.m.–Noon

A $15 late fee will be charged for orders not picked up by noon on Saturday, May 7.

Note: Extra stock will be sold at the pick up site.

Trees are sold in "bare root" condition and are ready for planting when picked up. Fruit trees such as apple or cherry are about four feet tall with a half-inch-diameter stem, which is considered a perfect size for planting.

Blues Hall of Fame – May 11^th

Local radio host and music historian Anthony has the blues, and he wants to share them at the Portage Lake District Library on Wednesday, May 11.

At 6:00 p.m., he will host the game show without a TV audience, "Blues Clues," and invites everyone to come and test their trivia knowledge about the blues and rock and roll.

The multi-media presentation "Black, White & the Blues: A Look at the Blues Hall of Fame" will be shown at 6:30 p.m. followed at 7:00 p.m. by the documentary film Home Sweet Chicago. This film tells the real story behind Chess Records, one of the most influential record labels in American pop music.

Currently the host of the program Yearbook: the 1960s on WMPL, Daniel was the host of the award-winning historical blues radio program Forbidden Radio, heard in the Detroit area in the mid-1990s.

Story Line Project – May 15^th

Dear Homeschooling Families,

There is still time to participate in the Story Line Project, and it is my sincerest hope that you will decide to do this.

The Story Line Project seems like a perfect fit for homeschooling families. In fact, this is a great opportunity to learn a new art form, investigate your family history, pay tribute to your family's ancestors, enjoy friendship with others in doing a project of this size and scope, and attend "Rockland" at the Rozsa Center, an opera about local history.

Mary Wright, lead artist for and inspiration behind the Story Line Project, will do a public presentation about it at the library later this month. While she is here, we will have the fabric, transfer paper, and heat press set up in the community room and do a demonstration of how it works.

The supplies for making your family banner will be available in the community room for several days for you to use at your convenience. The only thing you will need to do is write your story and print it out as a document or pdf file. I will print your stories for you at the library free of charge.

In fact, this entire project is free. Fabric, transfer paper, use of the heat press, copies of stories, and tickets to "Rockland" are all free.

What an opportunity!

Music Theatre Summer Camp – July 11^th

CALLING ALL KIDS MUSIC THEATRE CAMP: On July 11 – 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Sts. Peter & Paul Lutheran Church will be sponsoring the Calling All Kids Music Theatre Camp. This music camp is for any interested child who has completed second – seventh grade. Throughout the week campers will be preparing the Christian musical, "American Ideal", a children's musical about humility, for a final performance in a church service on Sunday morning July 17^th. Campers do not need any prior musical experience, just an interest and enthusiasm for music and performing. The cost for Calling All Kids Music Theatre Camp is $30. Each camper will receive a CD and script when they return their completed application form to Sts. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church.
